Kuokkanen -> Recommended Christmas movies/series (12/12/2021 10:02:14 AM)

What movies and TV series do we have to recommend to watch around Christmas? Because I'm from Finland, I name TV series Winter War which has also been shortened to a movie length. There is a Christmas scene where someone opens dugout's door so the enemy (Red Army) can hear Finnish Christmas songs and soldiers in guard duty join in the singing as artillery fire explodes around.

Some people think that "It's A Wonderful Life" with Jimmy Stewart is a good Christmas movie.

A war themed Christmas movie I can recommend is A Midnight Clear https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102443/

My favorite classic is what Ranger Joe mentioned, my wife's favorite is the 1951 A Christmas Carol https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0044008/
My millennial daughter has added Love Actually to the annual watchlist

eta: A Christmas Story https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085334/
There's a television channel in the U.S that runs it 24 hrs on Christmas Day

Scrooged = all time great Xmas film. The first two Die Hard's are good Xmas films [;)]

And what was the WWII film that took place on the fringe of the Bulge, where some Ami's were guarding a castle? They got in a snowball fight with the Jerry's. Castle Keep? I'll have to look for that again. Maybe it was corny.

In the war related movies there is:
Silent Night based on a factual account of a German woman who while seeking shelter in a cabin is intruded upon by three American and later three German soldiers. She mediates a temporary peace so they can all enjoy Christmas. Linda Hamilton gives a convincing performance.

Joyeux Noel Set in 1914 along the battle lines where French, German and Scottish soldiers are massed and decide to declare an informal truce for Christmas.

Casablanca

Curtis Lemay -> RE: Recommended Christmas movies/series (12/12/2021 5:56:11 PM)

A Christmas Story revolved around some seriously deadly weaponry - along with eyes being shot out and tongues being stuck to poles!

Erik Rutins -> RE: Recommended Christmas movies/series (12/12/2021 5:56:13 PM)

It's a Wonderful Life, the 1951 Christmas Carol, A Christmas Story, White Christmas, for the kids Charlie Brown's Christmas, Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer, those are typically our favorites those others sometimes rotate in and out. Die Hard is also a Christmas movie. :-)

+1 for It's A Wonderful Life as it is my favorite.

Miracle on 34th Street is another old favorite of mine.

If you are a fan of Charles Dickens, I suggest one of the versions of A Christmas Carol. The 1938 release is still many people's favorite.

There are many, many different types of Christmas movies. Hallmark made a number of them and they are quite popular. There are also popular animated Christmas movies made especially for children, e.g. A Chipmunk Christmas.

These a just a tiny few of the multitudes of Christmas movies available. You shouldn't have any trouble finding some you like.

The Scrooge: A Christmas Carol version with the incomparable Alastair Sim was on over the weekend. Christmas has officially begun and I'm in the holiday mood.

milkweg -> RE: Recommended Christmas movies/series (12/24/2021 9:39:09 PM)

On Netflix there is a movie called "The Man Who Invented Christmas", it's about Charles Dickens and why he wrote a Christmas Carol.

Erik Rutins -> RE: Recommended Christmas movies/series (12/25/2021 12:36:26 AM)

Forgot to add, Miracle on 34th Street, a real classic.

I always liked this movie for the holidays: Donovan's Reef starring John Wayne, Lee Marvin and Jack Warden (12 Angry Men).

For something very different (and requires patience) for me "Babette's Feast" encapsulates the meaning and spirit of Christmas without being a Christmas movie.

Happy Christmas

loki100 -> RE: Recommended Christmas movies/series (12/27/2021 8:09:29 AM)

Watched Klaus this year - really good. Superbly drawn and a neat tweak on the standard story
