...edged out by Taiho. The enclosed bows are nicer than the open examples in the Yorktowns

What every Stug needs, a paint-job that reflects it's majestic beauty.

Another from the ugly tree: Akagi as built.

Just remember that the concept of Aircraft Carrier was just being developed at the time.

The enclosed bows helped to keep the gas fumes in. Then a damage control officer had turned the fans on to get the fumes though the ship . . .

Which is probably appropriate since the name means "The Great Phoenix" . . .

The enemy told its people not to engage these ships unless they had numbers on their side - not that it helped them all that much!

There is a youtube video where a clever person set up some photos of the Taiho, and the Indomitable, and flicked between them a few times, before concluding that the IJN got hold of the plans for Indomitable and found them inspiring.

Perhaps it was just convergent evolution.

The enclosed bow had nothing to do with it. https://www.armouredcarriers.com/japanese-aircraft-carrier-taiho-armoured-flight-decks/

They are all very nice looking ships.

Especially the Iowa-class, and Bismarck-class, ships.

And a classic beauty captured during the night.

If the bow would have been open, then fresh air would have come in from the front and exited from the stern - bring with it the gasoline fumes.

It's an awful tank, I will admit. Apparently the Russians called it (loosely translated) "The honourable coffin for 6 men". It's riveted design meant that, if struck or just even moderately agitated, the bolts that held it together would be launched into the crew compartment like bullets. Which was, shall we say, less than optimal for the crews health.

Orm -> RE: Australian Beauties II (1/15/2022 8:27:44 PM)

A weird design. HMS Gotland is looking more like a cruise ship, than a cruiser, or rather a aircraft cruiser. What purpose she would have had in a conflict eludes me.

French ironclad Carnot. It hurts my eyes when I look at it. And this isn't the worst looking one.

warspite1 -> RE: Australian Beauties II (1/16/2022 4:59:33 AM)

The Leander-class. Beautiful. Unusual - certainly for British cruisers of the time - in that they had just one stack.

Well, you will have to open the picture to see them but here are a couple of nice, big [;)] things . . .

I guess that a person could call them "Jugs" [;)] and they appear to be a nice, matching set of those big and beautiful things . . .

A song as well . . .
