The manual is quite clear in section 7.2.1.13.1 on what can and can't be done by aircraft launched from a size 1 airfield. In short, no offensive operations. Yet, I could have sworn I remember something about this being modified and that single engine aircraft could conduct attacks against targets (except torpedo bombers). When I finally went looking for the evidence to support my "belief" in this optimistic interpretation/rewrite of the manual I couldn't find any. Was the manual changed in subsequent upgrades (please give the relevant upgrade number) where a size 1 base could conduct limited offensive ops or is the cited section of the manual still the governing rule? To support the importance of this question, I quote from a message sent to Adm Halsey: "...all the world wonders?"

No offensive missions may be flown from a size 1 airfield. That is in the manual and to my knowledge it never changed.

I suggest that you Read The Field Manual about Airfields starting at section 9.4, page 203. This does describe the size limitations for bombers. However, not stated there, is the fact that any bomber that carries a torpedo as it main armament can fly from a level 2 airfield with that load. That includes the Bettys, Nells, and so on. If there are no torpedoes available, they will carry the full bomb load with no altitude penalty from a size 2 airfield on a Naval Strike mission . . . [X(]

You may have seen reference to single engined bombers using a level 1 AF to perform search or recon missions. AFAIK they do not count as offensive missions.
