redrum68 -> How to Conquer Belgium in 1 Turn? (1/2/2022 5:48:49 PM)

So I'm not a very good Axis player but have seen other players take Belgium out in 1 turn. Looking for some tips or an example on how to do it.

Have a look at this picture:

If you are invading Netherlands, you can attack North of Brussels. And, from the Ardennes at the same time.

Or there is a way to completely bypass the Netherlands and capture Belgium...takes a lot of practice and even sometimes it does not go right.

Advice...

Play a Hot seat game...take out Poland and Denmark...then build what you need for France...you can actually ignore all but the Polish for the test.
Then save the game at the end of April...and you can replay it over and over and over...

Most people have...4 Armor, 2 Mech...200 supply trucks...
From there many build differently, but you should be able to test Belgium over and over using that.

Ok, yeah I went for the Belgium only approach and ignored the Netherlands as that's seems to be what most players do now. I had 4 Armor and 2 Mech with a bunch of supply trucks and wasn't able to do it. You can see the result in my AAR here: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/fb.asp?m=5124240. Maybe just more practice. Can top players succeed every time or is there enough randomness that sometimes even good players fail? I think I essentially needed 1 more attack on Brussels or had better luck on the previous attacks :/

Currently attacking Netherlands activate Belgium for the Allies.

stjeand -> RE: How to Conquer Belgium in 1 Turn? (1/2/2022 8:20:28 PM)

I would say that most succeed about 80% of the time...
BUT there is that one off where a unit holds more than it should and then things go south.

redrum68 -> RE: How to Conquer Belgium in 1 Turn? (1/2/2022 11:25:33 PM)

Good to know. I think the issue for me was that the Belgian units held a few times and then were overrun rather than retreated so there was still ZoC on the hex south of Brussels. This meant I could only attack Brussels from 1 hex and probably got a bit unlucky that the corps held against multiple attacks. Maybe Belgium should be weakened a bit so that it can be done close to 100% of the time as long as you have enough panzer/mech units?

ncc1701e -> RE: How to Conquer Belgium in 1 Turn? (1/3/2022 3:07:44 AM)

Belgium is all right imo. There is no need to weaken it more.

stjeand -> RE: How to Conquer Belgium in 1 Turn? (1/3/2022 2:30:31 PM)

No it should not be weaker...1 turn taking is luck based...one wrong hold or overrun and you can't do it.

redrum68 -> RE: How to Conquer Belgium in 1 Turn? (1/3/2022 2:44:32 PM)

Hmm. If the Germans are unlucky and don't take Belgium in 1 turn that would seem to make a strong defense of France even better...

stjeand -> RE: How to Conquer Belgium in 1 Turn? (1/3/2022 5:01:31 PM)

I could...in my mirror games with Hadros...neither of us took Belgium in one turn...then it rained turn 2 so it still held...

Then the strong defense went weird at that point...

He had 11 UK corps...2 mech 2 armor and a French armor. I lost a LOT of troops...included 2 Inf corps...
But killed 2 UK inf corps and 2 mech corps. Don't think I got an armor.

I had 7 UK corps to start with 1 mech (maybe 2) 2 armor 1 French armor...brought in the WDF when I saw his mass.
I took out 2 German armor and a mech but lost all my UK armor.

He then smashed into Africa and almost has it all overrun.

I ran Operation Sea Lion and just took almost all the south including London...

So it did not do either of us any good.

redrum68 -> RE: How to Conquer Belgium in 1 Turn? (1/3/2022 6:49:37 PM)

Interesting. How long did it take you to force France to surrender with the 11 UK corps? Surprised you then had the forces to start Sea Lion since I would assume many of the surviving UK corps would have gone back to England.

stjeand -> RE: How to Conquer Belgium in 1 Turn? (1/3/2022 7:41:37 PM)

Basically right before October...he took France halfway through September.

I think if I had put in 11 corps...I might have actually stopped the Germans.

I dislike doing that so I try not too...

I believe Hadros(Allies) lost 5 corps...and the remained went to Africa.

In my game as Allies I lost 8 corps I think, the entire UK army for the most part...they stayed in the UK...so Africa collapsed.

At the moment I think he might be in worse shape since I have London and Spain should have just joined the Axis.

redrum68 -> RE: How to Conquer Belgium in 1 Turn? (1/3/2022 8:09:38 PM)

Ok, so pretty close to France being saved by the weather and not falling til 1941. From my limited experience, it would seem a strong France defense needs to be nerfed a bit or need some house rules to limit BEF commitment.

Are either of you going to be able to do a 1941 Barbarossa?

stjeand -> RE: How to Conquer Belgium in 1 Turn? (1/3/2022 9:04:04 PM)

Nope we skipped it...I was going to but noticed a kink in his armor.

Hadros is known for his 42 Barbarossa...at least that is what Al said.

Normally for a 42 you have to take something...Africa, Middle East, UK...but you can have a very large German army.
BUT it is tougher.

I believe the last time I did it was against Harrybanana...and did well...until...43 where they just started to surgically defeat armor. Figured it out to late and by then it was over.
Needless to say do NOT leave your armor on the front lines if at all possible.

NOW this is my second game with the new rules...I am not used to them yet.
Used to take France and have JUST enough time to take Yugoslavia before rain hit.

BUT have not been lucky enough regarding that yet.
