actrade -> Refuel Just Escorts? (1/9/2022 10:42:00 AM)

Is there a way to have a TF that includes ships with less endurance (like escorts) refuel just the escort? Right now, as a workaround I simply have the escort form a new task force (which by default is set to full refuel), then I go back to the original TF and pick the escort back up. I realize I could set the TF as minimal refuel, but would the larger ships take on any fuel, or would just the ships with lower endurance refuel? Obviously, I don't want ships that don't need fuel to take ANY fuel on, but I want to make sure my escorts have enough to return to their home port. Thanks!

In a word, yes.

Ok thanks, I thought so but couldn't see anything stated in the manual. Second question of the day. When using the B key for base search and then clicking on show all/minimal/low levels, it gives you a nice listing of bases low on supplies. Is there a way to do the same for fuel and the same mechanic doesn't seem to work? Thanks.

btd64 -> RE: Refuel Just Escorts? (1/9/2022 12:30:04 PM)

Set "Way Points" for the whole TF. At each Way point you can setup refueling....GP

EDIT: From the same screen you can also set the TF to return along the same route....GP

You should be able to sort your "All TFs" screen by endurance. Unfortunately, it will still show in red those that already have waypoints set to refuel enough to get to their destination.

actrade -> RE: Refuel Just Escorts? (1/9/2022 3:24:42 PM)

And with regard to sorting bases that are short on fuel, am I missing something or is there no way to do so?

Zovs -> RE: Refuel Just Escorts? (1/9/2022 3:27:30 PM)

What does it mean when the endurance is red in a TF after setting a DH or waypoints?

The "All Bases" list has a column for fuel. You should be able to sort on that. The question of "How much fuel is needed" cannot be addressed because it changes turn to turn. For example, if the Allied Carriers decide to go to Port Moresby to refuel after the Battle of Coral Sea, the base will be "short on fuel". But if they go elsewhere, the base will be fine.

I means that they will need some class three supplies!

This does not factor in refueling from within the convoy.

I used Class 3 supplies to run a '68 mustang once...it was about 5 years later when I learned that it was Class 3 supplies...lol

Somebody put DF2 into an M151A2 at night, then started it the next morning. That somebody was a diesel mechanic . . .

So to summarize, so I understand this quickly, you cannot refuel JUST the lower endurance ships in a task force by themselves, right? If you try to refuel them in port or at sea via an oiler, ALL ships will take on fuel, even if they aren't technically low? Is his method of temporarily disbanding the escorts to refuel the best way to ensure only they receive the fuel?

No. Look at your refueling settings and what they mean.

actrade -> RE: Refuel Just Escorts? (1/20/2022 11:33:37 AM)

I have started using the "set minimal fuel" for most of my TF. That way, if a TF arrives in a port and the tankers and other bigger ships are fine on fuel but the escorts are low, the escorts will refuel enough to get to where they're going.

For this to work correctly, the task force needs to arrive in a port with “no refuel” set, then you click minimum fuel and give them a new destination, THEN they will refuel only what’s needed, yes?

How do you prevent the task force from fueling up when they pull into port? Doesn’t the port have to be their final destination in order for them to stop there?

actrade -> RE: Refuel Just Escorts? (1/20/2022 1:48:44 PM)

If you use minimal fuel, the bigger ships won't refuel unless they need it to complete the mission, which you should know ahead of time that they don't. Don't forget that ships short fuel in the task force will "borrow" fuel from other ships at sea provided it doesn't leave the donor ships short on fuel to complete the mission. You can also set waypoints to other ports along the way to your final destination, again with "minimal fuel" selected (also make sure you select don't unload cargo).

When ships refuel at sea, they ignore the settings for the amount of fuel (minimum, tactical, full) and will take as much fuel as they can, only restricted by the amount the donor ships are able to part with. So if you Refuel At Sea for the whole TF, the fuel will be redistributed among the whole TF. If you want to refuel just the smallest ships, create a new TF with just them in it, have that TF Refuel At Sea, then transfer the ships back to the original TF.

But really - that is not even necessary. The TF will automatically give the shortest range ships additional fuel to get to destination when they are critically short. Doing it by player intervention is only necessary when you want to control where the TF is when the refueling is done (e.g. so the AI doesn't do that for you within range of an enemy base) which you could scoot by with full ops points for movement).

RangerJoe -> RE: Refuel Just Escorts? (1/20/2022 9:22:59 PM)

Instead of minimal fuel, give them tactical fuel so they get 10% more so they can take evasive actions and such things. You can set waypoints with your TFs and have a refuel setting for those so your TFs can go from the West Coast of the USA to Australia and refuel three different times on the way there. They can refuel from the port, tankers disbanded in the port, and/or AOs. The AOs can and will take oil from a tankers to give to a ship. Then a player can also state "return by the same route" or something like that and they will reuse the same stops and refueling instructions.

I haven’t played with the waypoint settings yet. You’re saying there is an option to dictate a refuel at one of these?

Yes, when you put in the waypoint you can select the refueling settings. Refueling will also resupply with ammo if I remember correctly so having an appropriate tender at a base where the port facilities with Naval support is not high enough to resupply the ship. That is where even those small AGs help and even ADs would be useful there as well. If you end up with spare escorts, you can also swap them out (manually) and those tenders can also help to repair damage.

Speaking of "refueling stations", look waaayyyyy down in the Society Islands and you'll find the small atoll of Bora Bora. Troops will appear there and others will show up with that as their "Target". Glenn Williford's awesome book, "Racing the Sunrise" tells us why:

We are lucky that we can just click “load supplies” and don’t have to worry about what order they are loaded in!
It sounds like the real life operation loaded in transport mode and should have loaded in amphib mode.

FYI I read the repair ship guide 101 and it was helpful. This post was great as well! How long does the TF stay at the waypoint to refuel? Is it dictated by ops points? IE, if they have enough ops points to do the desired refuel and it doesn't max them out could they theorhetically be underway the same turn?

Especially in the early war, the speed and ease with which one can load entire convoys of ten or more vessels in one or two days is, well, optimistic. Another "game play vs. reality" conundrum.

Great link by the way!

It does depend upon the OPs points as well as the refueling capacity of the port if you are getting fuel from there. Usually it is the AOs and/or tankers which will use up their OPs points first, especially for a large TF.

Having been on a wet asroc deck with a whole bunch of other available seamen (E3 and under usually) hauling on a 3" diameter manila line further ruining a pair of leather gloves on the ancient Charlie Deuce during 10'-12' seas which did not bother the tanker at all but had another bunch of freshly reported young'uns holding a meeting on the fantail - the above statement gets a very hearty
YOU GOT THAT RIGHT!
