SunlitZelkova -> Can a UAV fly itself back to base after losing comms (in real life)? (1/12/2022 1:48:58 AM)

I ask, as this is what happened during a scenario involving the J-6 UAV unit added recently.

I think it depends on the specifics of the UAV. Some have a Return to Base AI, but that may depend on GPS access, which may be disrupted in the loss of comms

Some can, some can't. We've added a way for us to indicate this in the DB. Under the new system, UAVs are given a level on an "Autonomy Scale," with each level representing varying behavior when comms are lost: the lowest level represents "crash" (think cheap consumer drones); the next level up might be "land yourself" (slightly less-cheap consumer drones), etc. etc. until the highest level, which would be "hunt down John Connor."

I suspect the jury-rigged J-6 drones would fall (pun intended) quite low on that scale. But that's not been implemented sim-side just yet.

I have a $350 drone that will do this, so I'll go out on a limb and say "Yes".

Yes, assuming that the crew have done their jobs and input the correct Emergency Missions that will return the UAV / RPAS to home plate without taking out an airliner or something enroute.

Depending on the UAV and the mission programing this is one option. Others are:

-carry on with a pre-programmed mission storing all data before RTB
-switch channels and look for another GCS
-try and link with another UAV and get daisy-chain coms through that
-go Kamikaze at a previously identified target

Standard RTB is pretty common.
