I set up the Air Transport AOG to follow that unit. Is that ALL I need to do? Is there an air directive type for this? An air directive that gets edited and changed to transport freight to a HQ unit and air drop it near the unit? I thought I read that some where ...

There is a button on the upper left side to open the interface to select target and staging base (where there are supplies stockpiled). It works much better if the targeted hex contains an airbase.
