zoikkis -> Running CSVN with PlayOnLinux (1/22/2022 12:03:20 PM)

I managed to get CSVN to run on Linux Mint 20.2, installed through PlayOnLinux.

- Download the game installer and unzip it somewhere
- Open PlayOnLinux and choose "Install a program" --> "Install a non-listed program" "Install on new virtual drive"
- Enable the option: "Use another version of wine". Options "Configure wine" and "Install some libraries" you can leave unchecked
- Use the version 4.0 of wine. You might need to install it through the main menu if you haven't already. This can be done afterwards too
- Choose 32-bit installation. 64-bit doesn't work for some reason and crashes it almost immediately
- Follow the installation instructions (selecting the unzipped executable installer) and install .NET as requested
- Create shortcut at least for csvn.exe

After the installation, select CSVN from the main menu and click "configure"
- Under general tab, make sure you are using Wine version 4.0. If not, click the icon on the right and install it. With Wine 5 the game works but not the scenario editor. With Wine 6 and up, the game didn't work past the scenario selection menu
- Go to "Display" tab and for "Direct Draw Renderer", choose "gdi". This is important, otherwise the game won't work

I did play the first bootcamp with these settings and it worked okay. Well, almost... One thing that doesn't work is the graphics for the counters in the unit list. On the map they work and everything else seems to work too, including text boxes and sounds. I'll continue tweaking to see if anything would help.

I assume that these same instructions would apply on PlayOnMac, but haven't tried it yet.

Thank you for sharing this, @zoikkis! I know Berto has a linux rig or two in his basement, this is good intel.

Good to know all of this. We have about 10 physical Linux systems and VMs around here, so this could come in handy.

I successfully ran CSME on Linux Wine a few years back. The only glitches I recall were (a) some dialog boxes were blank, and (b) sounds were iffy.

Thanks for the tips!
