2) Stand-off. If you have assets that can still see from the cheap seats and can effectively wield the big stick, then that’s where they should be. Armour (including PCs) back a minimum of 500m (2 hexes). The enemy is clever and elusive, and usually well supplied with some form of hand held anti-armour weaponry. If you have the reach, then use it.

Tell me about it. In Operation Starlite, I foolishly pushed my tracks up as close support...and lost most of them. Apparently 12.7mm MG fire and RPG-2s will make mincemeat of them, which I should have realized.

It’s a tough call, to be sure. I often wonder if the evolution of infantry transport is going to go full circle, and the safest means for them to travel will end up being…their feet.

I believe it already has. When you fight, or rather, train to fight against a near-peer opponent, you don't drive to contact with APCs. There's just too much firepower against you at platoon or even at squad level to allow for that.

I am a great fan of the little tic-tac-toe scenarios of Teaching Sets 1948 to 1985 in the Middle East game, where there's basically two reinforced companies facing each othe. In the most modern setting, you are seen you are killed.

I recall one scenario similar to what you are referring to. Could be played either side, so I picked A, but B went first. Before I could even touch the keyboard, a whole company of mech infantry and their Nagmash evaporated under a hail of fire from SU-100s, T34-85s, and Saggers. They were all set up by the designer bare arse out in the open at around 1500m range. Have to treat the M113 (and others of that ilk) like the old cavalry horse - dismount under cover, let someone else hold the reigns, and you head off through the trees to find the bad guys. There are IFVs today that are heavier and more heavily armed than most WW2 medium tanks, and they won't fare any better.

Cavalry units of the world, rename yourself to Dragoons!

Why did you delete it? It was brilliant!
