I have been operating under the impression that having just one spotting group works for the whole task force in naval bombardment and further air groups spotting do not add any help.

I have no data on multiple air air groups operating as spotters in the same task force, and I do not remember any update info that changed this.

Do multiple air groups {from the task force} acting as spotters give any help?

A group spots for all ships but you want to fly all your planes
to increase the odds of a successful spotting.

Note what he says about moonlight.

Thanks Trugrit.

How do you set the floatplanes on your Bombardment Group to spot for it? What mission is that?

Set them for Recon. Night operations. I always set the target as whatever I am bombarding but it looks like you can set range to be 0 and work as well.

And by doing this, there is some sort of accuracy bonus from the bombardment? They must be set for night recon?

The default for bombardments is night bombardment and immediate retirement, so you need night recon for that. You can try for a day bombardment by having the TF set to "Remain on Station" and have at least one FP set to daytime recon, range 0. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't and sometimes you can even get both night and day bombardment from the same TF.

The thing to remember is that when you set the TF as a Bombardment mission, the game uses an algorithm that tries to get the TF the right distance from the target to sprint in, bombard and sprint away toward its home base. You don't have absolute control of much in that type of mission.

All too true!

You only need one successful spot, but remember that the chance to successfully spot is a probability based on the recon skill of your pilots flying missions. If your floatplane drivers have low recon skill, you will need a bunch to get a single successful spot.

NavSearch, not recon. But I knew what you meant....GP

I believe the relevant skill check is recon, btd. Do you have a source that says NavSearch? It strikes me as odd they would use NavSearch for ground target, but I suppose they could have, though the mission is recon and I seem to get better results with pilots trained in that skill (though the sample size is small and there are so many confounding variables).

I miss read the post. I thought you were talking about looking for a TF. My bad....GP

There was another thread recently about trying to get a surface battle.

I've done that before more than once.

Damn. Night recon for bombardments. Never even thought about that as necessary always figured day was all you needed. Always learning something new with this game. Love it! Time to improve my bombardments! [sm=character0085.gif]

Unless you wait to set it as bombardment until the turn you are going in to bombard. Keep it as SCTF until then and it will move how you tell it to. Then all you need to do is make sure that it ends within range on the day before you want to bombard.
