Rhodan -> hey guys (9/18/2003 2:20:32 AM)

I've been doing some serious touring the last weekend, stopped at Margraten cemetary in LImburg, the southern most province of the Netherlands, where a considerable number of GI's are buried, a large number of them never identitified..walking among those white crosses and david stars and tombstones, one is quickly overcome b y a deep sense of awe for the plain simple bravery of those men. Not honour, but bravery. It humbles.

After that I redid part of the Peiper route from Luxemburg into belgium, visiting the Bastogne Historical center , and just sat through a very crappy 30 minutes multimedia presentation that still somehow managed to get the feeling across of what those men, on both sides, had to go through. And again that respect for their bravery.

anyways, a fe wpictures were taken there, for those of you who would like to see them , here they are :

Thanks Rhodan...those are great pictures. I hope to make it over there someday and see a few of these memorials for myself.

back in 1993 my wife was fortunate enough to attend the world balloon championship in luxembourg. she stayed with our friends in amsterdam, then took the train through belgium. while in lux she stayed with a family that had volunteered to host. the patriarch was about 8 when the battle of the bulge was going on. he had lots of stories from the war, the occupation by the germans, the liberation by the allies. picture books were brought out. tears were shed. lots of buildings in the area still have battle damage on them as a reminder of the past. amazing place to visit, wonderful people. no cold drinks.
