tyronec -> Fighter patrol range. (2/5/2022 6:52:35 PM)

This is T6 of my campaign game with MSAG.
Aircraft are on GS, some of my Axis fighters are coming from an airbase that is outside of their range circle. They are not using drop tanks.
Not the first time I have seen this, a couple of moves ago they were intercepting GA at 19 hexes away.

From what I have seen, the aircraft range code seems to have numerous bugs and flaws that have yet to be addressed.

For example, transport escort missions have fighter escorts flying at 40+ hexes, without explanation.

Sometimes, I have seen fighters, unpredictably, use staging bases to extend their range. But is is very random and very difficult to predict or plan around.

As a result, sometimes mission have escorts when unexpected. And then, GS bombers are cut to shreds flying without escorts.

AND, there is no WiTE2 GS setting (like other air missions) to prevent this from happening.

I have no doubt that you are seeing this. I am just surprised more people are not reporting it or it is not being caught by QA.

We recently changed escorts with transports so they did not have to fly to the stage base and then fly from there to the target. They are effectively meeting the a/c on the way when the stage base is far in the rear and they are forward. That was a few updates ago. As for ground support, I would not be surprised that there are some oddities with regards to stage bases and how they might extend range. For this straight CAP, I'd be surprised if there's any code re stage bases, so I'd expect it would be cleaner. Would really help to have a save so Gary can track how the a/c are getting there.

The funny thing is that the chaos of war is much more chaotic than the chaos of our code. [:)]

I pulled your saves, and have one that allows me to recreate your attack. I will have Gary take a look and see why they are extending their range. BTW, I only had the fighters show up when I turned GS on. When I had it off no a/c flew. Was that your experience?

I've seen this, it seems to happen when the Soviets only have fighters flying GS in a particular combat.

Am not using any bombers, they are all on Rest or far behind the front line. Normal practice for me for much of '41.
Could be they are extending their range by using staging bases, I was not thinking that could happen. If it is part of the game it kind of brings into question the range circles.

Joel Billings -> RE: Fighter patrol range. (2/7/2022 6:22:28 PM)

Did you transfer the planes at Akkerman to Ochakov? Gary is using the combat range for fighters flying CAP, not the escort range. The range listed for fighters in the display is the escort range. The fighters at Ochakov are within range, but the Akkerman fighters are not. I can't get the Akkerman fighers to fly to attack. I moved the Ochakov fighters far away, and still couldn't get the Akkerman fighers to fly until I tried some attacks within their combat range (in which case they did fly). Gary doesn't see how they could fly more than the combat range from their air base when he ran it in the code. Combat range is 4/3 times the escort range. If you actually had a/c from Akkerman fly 19 hexes than that's a bug, but I can't duplicate it.

tyronec -> RE: Fighter patrol range. (2/7/2022 7:58:21 PM)

I cannot be 100% sure what fighters were transferred when.
I am sure the combats took place outside the range circles, however if they can intercept at 4/3 times the distance of the range circles then that could account for it.
Will keep an eye out for this in future with that in mind.

The time when I had fighters flying 19 hexes it was a GA intercept, however that could be accounted for if the combat hex on the map is indicative of combat rather than the specification of where the intercept took place. You often get some odd GA intercept hexes so am thinking that could be the reason why.

Stamb -> RE: Fighter patrol range. (2/7/2022 8:02:15 PM)

What range circles are actually representing?

Joel Billings -> RE: Fighter patrol range. (2/7/2022 8:38:29 PM)

For fighters, they are the escort range, which is 3/4 of the combat range.
