juv95hrn -> Challenging AI settings for new campaign? (2/7/2022 2:07:04 AM)

I would like a "realistic" and properly challenging game vs. the AI, without outclassing it, nor being rofl-stomped in every single combat.

I take it the Axis in Stalingrad to Berlin might provide this?

What would be a suitable difficulty level? 120 for the decreased ZOC movement cost? 110, 115 or any other number?

Thanks!

the problem is its so dependent.

how well do you know the game systems, would you use the AI Assist for Air etc?

assuming you understand the basics and want to do a degree of manual control for air, I'd say:

a) if the AI is the defender give it 110, that improves it a lot but its not too much, certainly vs the Soviet AI in 1941 don't go much over this
b) if the AI is to be the main attacker, give it 120. Now the problem is this invokes what some call the 'tactical nukes', see the AI discussions in the player's notes for this. Basically it generates extra disruptions if it wins and this roughly compensates for it not forming as many pockets as a player would

good thing is you can shuffle between these as suits, so try say 120 for the Soviet AI in Stal-Berlin, if you find that is too much drop it to something in the 110-119 range

When we are talking about logistics and this settings. Does setting value for 110 or 120 provides additional bonuses (like no penalty during winter) or it will just increase amount of freight that is getting to a depots to 110% and 120%?

no its only morale where increasing the value gives both the linear benefit and triggers behaviour or secondary advantages.

So if you put logistics at say 110 then that multiplier is applied to every value such as railyard capacity/trains, so in effect the AI can send more from its NSS than a player can and so on.

As Loki says the AI is better at attacking than defending. This means you need to set the AI advantage higher when you are defending to get a reasonable game out of it, so you can end up with a game where you are exploiting the AI mistakes to counter balance that.
My suggestion would be to start with a game where you are attacking, you are more likely to get a good game out of it.
So Axis in '41, Soviets in StB or VtB. If you are not that familiar with the game then start on NORMAL before progressing to CHALLENGE.

I dont want game as attacker on normal, as stated in the OP.

I started StB as Axis on 100 and Soviets on 125. I wonder if I will get obliterated due to AI bonuses, or have a challenging back to Berlin on these settings, before I put too much time into the set up.

The AI gets lower movement cost in ZOC to ZOC, so thats a major threshold in difficulty. At least they did at release.

I played a grand campaign and when I lost the initiative in early 1943 I bumped the Soviet AI to 120 morale

the result was a good challenge, in the end I won against the 1945 HWM test but almost by definition I started in a better place than the Axis do in StB. If I recall even by the end I'd only lost one or two German divisions in pockets.

Yes, I suppose I look for a "historical" outcome, where I am slowly pushed back and lose the war. Not turn it around and win contrary to history. But I dont want the USSR on Germany by 1943, so I am uncertain what is a reasonable level for this. Remember I dont lower my own capacity, only increase the AIs.

Joel Billings -> RE: Challenging AI settings for new campaign? (2/9/2022 4:29:41 PM)

The good news is you can change it during the game, so if things seem to be going wrong, you can adjust it one way or the other.

juv95hrn -> RE: Challenging AI settings for new campaign? (2/9/2022 4:52:25 PM)

Thats a good point.

I am happy to report that the AI did an excellent job at making a double circle around Stalingrad during the first turn. No chance of breaking through any time soon. May I guess this is a scripted move, like the first turn of the GC?

Oh, and I would be happy to receive and hints and tips for this campaign. My plan is to move transport planes to around Rostov, and try to maintain the S-grad pocket for as long as possible, empty the Rhzev Salient and then hold on for all I can. If its anything I am unsure of, it would be the air situation, since I havent played the Axis on WITE2 yet. Thanks!
