So This is absolutely the quickest I have developed a scenario to TRY to keep up with ongoing events. It is actually a very simple scenario with the Russian Air and Missile forces striking the Ukraine in the opening 18 hours of the war. It uses unlimited magazines as it is so short. The only aircraft likely to be able to rearm are the fighters, and after the initial strikes I doubt they will have much to do! Other than aircraft with a 20 hour load out (MiG-31K, Tu-95 and Tu-22m) you choose your loadouts. Basically it's the Russian version of "Shock and Awe."

Kyiv, Ukraine, 2022

The Time Is: Friday, 25 February, 2022, 15:00 UTC
Friday, 25 February, 2022, 18:00 Kyiv Time
Playable as Russia Only
24 Hours Duration
Built under C:MO BETA Build 1147.41 Database DB3000 v492

Background: This scenario is my attempt to estimate the current (at the time the scenario was developed in Feb. 2022) Russian/Belarussian Air Force build up along the northern and eastern frontier with the Ukraine. Some units are actually at their home basis but others are units deployed from central and far eastern Russia. My estimation is Putin’ meeting with PRC President Hu also included an arrangement allowing Russian Air force units along their frontier the freedom/confidence to redeploy.

This would be the first day of an air campaign to destroy the Ukrainian Air Force and Integrated Air Defense System (IADS). I only wanted to cover the northern and eastern portions of the Ukraine and while I assume that there would be fighting near Odessa, and possibly an amphibious landing there, the emphasis is on the Kyiv area and the nearby bases/airports.

Mission: Your mission is to destroy and degrade as much of the Ukrainian Air Force and Air Defenses as possible with minimal losses in the initial strike of the war.

Like I said, I built it fast so please reply with any errors you find.

Just grabbed it. I notice everything is set to reserve and ready time of six hours. Is it your intention that I should wait six hours and then begin loading or should I start loading now? I realize it'll let me start loading right away at the same six hour period but I just wanted to understand your intention.

Looks interesting though. That's a lot of firepower!

I'll give it a whirl and post an AAR

Yes load now. It's a Trick Gunner told me to use Reserve to set ready times to longer periods than the normal. So you'll notice some "Fighter" loadouts are set to 4 1/2, 5 or 6 hours even thought the game will allow then in three.

I'll mention this in the notes, as if you had a question on it others will.

Thanks.

BTW: Whoever downloaded the scenario first, I found a mistake and corrected it, the Backfires had AS-4's on them. Oooooops I corrected that.

So I've got the loadouts setup and one thing I noticed is that both SU-25 units are awfully far away from any targets, even when using the Long-Range loadouts. I figure I can still have them carry AS-11 ARM's but that's about it (unless other targets pop up later!). If that was intended, no worries, just an observation.

Haven't actually set anyone in motion yet but will sooner or later.

I know but those are the Su-25's actual bases, so I left them there.

No problem. Looks like they'll go 400nm with AS-11 ARMs (which themselves have a range of 130nm). Seems an odd use for SU-25's but that let's my heavies do other stuff. [8D]

Whenever I play as Pact/Soviet/Russians in CMO, I have to remember that A) they typically don't have much range as western analogues and B) most of their tactical aircraft can't do aerial refueling. When I was adding the GSFG airbases awhile back, I was constantly wondering how they planned to use their forces when their Mig-27's and SU-25's could barely reach out of East Germany! [:D]

Gunner98 -> RE: PT: Kyiv, Ukraine, 2022 (posted 02-12-2022) (2/16/2022 8:34:31 PM)

I think it was standard practice/drill for most of the VVS Ftr/Bmbrs to deploy to dispersal bases much closer to the front, the Mig-23BN (mostly), Mig-27, Su-25 and all helicopters. In the cold war they assumed that if they stuck to their home bases they would die or be trapped and dispersal assisted with deception.

I know that there are dispersal bases all along the Baltic frontier, not sure about the Ukrainian, but they would deploy in Sqn strength (12 AC) and the Frogfoot could use highways fairly easily.

I'll give this a look Al, thanks

B
