Will952 -> Significance - or lack thereof - Sevastopol (2/18/2022 4:24:24 PM)

Just thought I'd raise this as it was an interesting point that came out of an earlier thread about Leningrad Soviet start position.

As it stands it's difficult to see why a German player should bother sending troops to take Sevastopol - it's heavily fortified, so needs either a prolonged infantry assault, or artillery, plus a HQ. At the time that you are driving past the Crimea (usually around Autumn '41), those things are in short supply. Even if Sevastopol is captured you gain very little, as the Soviets can easily block the chokepoint that snakes round into the back of Rostov.

As the Soviets, conversely, there is little reason to put much effort into defending it either - a single army or corps in the fortress itself is enough to make it too much of a pain for the German player to dedicate resources to removing them.

Suggestions:
1) Make Sevastopol a NM city

..that's about all I got. I think it just needs something to make it both a) a juicier German target and b) more worthwhile defending for the Soviets.
