Schlonz -> Pibber paddle steamer (2/18/2022 7:15:26 PM)

Hi all,

I'm currently playing my first scenario featuring PBR's,
and I'm very disappointed with their speed, or rather the lack of it.

According to the unit handbook, "This unit can move a distance of up to 22 km...per hour..". [&:]
With movement costs of 33 AP per hex, you can only move three hexes per turn.
Even when assuming a real-life turn length of only 6 minutes (as in the old CS games),
you end up with a 'top speed' of 7.5 km per hour.

Really, is nobody else annoyed at the fact, that a foot slogging VC unit is considerably faster than a patrol boat?
IMHO, most of the vessels are far too slow ingame.
Or did I miss something?

The PBR's have a top speed of 53 km/h in the game data.

So it is how that is translated to being on water that is causing them to be slower than you'd expect.

Thanks for the reply, Jason, but I dare to disagree.

I know, you're pretty familiar with the ingame data, but just for the record:

MkII PBR (A) Speed: IRL 53 km/h (28.5 kn, 32 mph) - Unit Handbook 31 km/h - movt AP: 24 (water) - hexes per turn: 4
VC Rifle Plt 63 Speed: IRL ? - Unit Handbook 9 km/h - movt AP: 19 (unpaved) - hexes per turn: 5

If this is WAD, it doesn't make any sense to me.
At this cruising speed, Captain Willard would still be on his way to Colonel Kurtz's jungle hideout. [;)]

What the Unit Handbook says is related directly to that scenario, something out of my control. That is a coding thing and how it translates the base data into the speed on water.

But the data itself says 53km/h, as shown below.

Sigh.......I'll leave it like that.

At least Boromir agrees with me.
