BananaConvention -> Escorting bombers originating from other bases than fighters (2/21/2022 3:00:12 PM)

First, thanks to EVERYONE who instructed me on how to use LRCAP to protect my ships with land based figters. It worked exactly as you said, and I stopped ALL the enemy bombers sent last turn on my ships and got a lot of bomber kills! Now I have found a new problem.

I sent bombers from Thailand and Vietnam to attack British ground forces near Patani. However, they were intercepted by British fighters and I suffered heavy losses. I had several of my fighter squadrons based at Singora, Kota and patani on escort but they did not escort the bombers at all. So my question is, how to ensure my fighters forward located on Malaya can link up and escort bombers coming in from much further away? Is this even possible?

Thanks!!

It helps if the squadrons share an HQ. Same service/nationality too. An alternative is sweeping the target first, of course.

Sweep the same altitude or 2k to 3k higher

Read post 24 in this thread

If you follow the instructions from the thread you should be OK most of the time.

One word of advice though. If your fighters are in base A, and your bombers are in base B, and bad weather happens in base A, then your bombers may fly UNESCORTED. In case of a bad weather, I do not think you get any feedback info in-game why the fighters have not flown, which can be frustrating.

In addition to Yaab's link there is also a guide for air coordination found here:

Also I think it is important to note that there are no absolutes. Even if you have setup everything correctly, things can still go wrong.
So it's always good practice to think about the worst case and ponder if you can afford it.

Also, like the gorn said, sweep the target hex until your recon shows no enemy fighter's....GP

It looks like your bombers were coming from around 10+ hexes away and your fighters from much closer. An interesting possibility is to have ordered your fighters to not fly escort but LRCAP over the hex the bombers were targeting.
If the fighters have sufficient fuel to remain over the target hex while the bombers are flying in, they could still be there to help protect the bombers from any fighters that are still in the air after you have done your sweeps. (Sweeps with your Zeros are the best answer to protecting the bombers- Do a number of them in the same turn to be sure).
No matter what there are so many factors that impact the ability of different fighters and different bombers from coordinating attacks, anything can happen.
