Gecko -> Airborne units and naval target selection (9/28/2003 9:19:02 PM)

Hello out there,

as I've been playing Gary Grigsby's "War in the South Pacific" for the 8Bit Commodore C64 a long time, I am quite familiar now with UV. Nevertheless I've run into a problem or two. In WITSP I was able to tell a bomber sqd. which naval target it shall select. If I've read the manual correctly than the AI searches for naval targets independently if bomber sqds. are given the 'naval attack' mission. So: how can I select naval targets manually? I want to use G4M from Rabaul to cut off APs and AKs resupplying Port Moresby but the AI thinks they aren't worth a sortie and attacks cruisers at Guadalcanal.
My second problem concerns airborne units. I'm playing the great campaign (May 1942) and I want to capture undefended (as my recon planes tell me) Buna garrison with a swift air assault to support my land attack on Port Moresby from Lae. Historically the Yokosuka SNLF were airborne units (this force had taken Menado as part of the Sasebo Raiding Force) but in UV their unit icon is the same as for infantry. And according to the intel screen I will not get any airborne units at all. I tried loading a different SNLF INF force into Ki-57-I Topsy cargo planes, but an enemy base is not a valid target for transporting them to.
If these are RTFM questions then please excuse me.

thanx, Gecko

UV doesn't have a manual naval target selection, the targets for air strikes against TFs are are always chosen by the AI. Sometimes this leads to unwanted or plain stupid results... There have been several long and sometimes heated debates over this issue on this forum in the past.
If you want to cut off PM, use Vals and Kates from Lae, Buna or Dobadura (once you have built up the latter). A CV force prowling between Australia and PM is also an effective way to starve out PM.

Re airborne troops, AFAIK the only unit in the game which is capable of airborne movement by design is an US Regiment. But you can easily grab Buna with a few troops delivered by a couple of DDs on a fast transport mission from Rabaul (I think this is the classic opening move for the Japanese in the long campaign, fast transporting troops from Rabaul to Buna and GG).

that's bad news. But nontheless:

danke für Deine schnelle Antwort.

bye, Gecko
