THE HATED HURTGEN CAMPAIGN..Battle Nr 1. AAR.
I used my core points to buy: 2 M4A3´s – 2 HT M3A2´s and 3 Bazooka Team’s with M9´s.
TURN 1-4:
I decided from the beginning of the battle to do this one very methodical – Knowing how WB usually keeps some kind a surprise in his sleeve – First three turns I used the 60mm to lay a carpet of smoke in front of my advancing troops and rest of Arty. Did what they could to pound the centre of Kommerscheide. No contact with the enemy before late turn 4 where I did loose a few Inf. Boys to an Inf. Bunker that seems to be located somewhere SE of the town. Now I’ve been spotted, so no doubt that the Ger. Arty. Will retaliate!!
TURN: 5:
Some incoming light Ger. Arty, not much yet, but I’m sure I haven’t seen nothing yet! Still advancing towards Kommerscheide. More Bunkers is popping up! Wind is very hard and it’s blowing gaps in my smoke screen! My poor Inf. Boys, this turn they lost nearly a Sqd!! More incoming Arty. And they are becoming more and more accurate every turn.. Still no change in tactics, will continue to lay smoke and press forward..
TURN 6:
Nothing new. Still advancing slow and painful, with the use of all available smoke grenade we can muster! My 3 Shermans – the imob one is no going strong - + the HT´s with onboard Bazooka teams, will stay behind my Inf. Just NW of Kommerscheide. There they will be ready when or if “Jerry” decides to put in some armour. Managed to get a Recon unit + a Inf. Sqd close to the MG Bunker blocking the road to Kommerscheide. Tried some CA, but failed! Casualties this turn 8-9 men.
TURN 7:
More incoming Arty!! Not that it causes a lot of casualties, but instead a lot of suppression :o(
Still my Inf. Heroically charching forward..Jubiii…Just in time smoke from my 105 and 75mm´s and just where it was supposed to hit. Now it’s forward to the Inf. Bunker and MG Bunker who has caused me so much trouble. 1-2-3 and 4 CA´s later and both of them is ready to be used as filling in the new road we have to construct here when this battle is over. So at last some good news to report back to Div. HQ!!
TURN 8:
Now we are entering the outskirts of the town. And for turn in a long time, no casualties!! Of cause there’s still the usually incoming Ger. Arty, but lately it has become a bit more inaccurate..
TURN 9:
Where is “Jerry”?? Closing in on the centre of Kommerscheide..very quiet? Only his Arty. Is present, one could almost adjust ones watch by it. In the NW corner of town K Comp. HQ manage to knock out a MG Bunker and in first attempt  Have now decided to bring forward Armour and HT´s close behind my Inf. There is a smell of predator in the air..Panther maybe!??
TURN 10:
The most forward Sqd´s from K Comp. Is now in the centre of town…FALL DOWN!!Under attack from what is looks like a Ger. Inf. Plt. Heavie casualties, 2 Sqd´s almost wiped outL Returning fire.. Bringing in reinforcements and more return fire, then laying some smoke, need a brake to regroup before we counter.. In the North and south of town, recon reports no contact with the enemy.
TURN 11:
Pushing forward in the centre of Kommerscheide with a fresh Plt. More casualties, but also to “Jerry” this time!:0) Comp. L´s HQ finally make them run!! Centre of town is under control. Pursuing the retreating Ger. Inf… Still recon North and South Reports no contact. Laying smoke and HE SE of town in preparation for advance SE with armour and HT´s.
TURN 12:
Kommerscheide is under control and secured. ½ my Inf. Is digging in and other ½ is together with armour and HT´s preparing to go SE..Continuing to lay smoke along the road going SE.
TURN 13:
Cautiously advancing SE along the road, still no contact….DAMN!! 1 HT imob due to minefield! Bazooka guys most continue on foot..Stil no contact. Have been to careless with my Arty. HE rounds, only smoke rounds left!
TURN 14:
Closing in on Vic Obj NW of Schimdt..Still no contact with “Jerry”.
TURN 15:
Still the same, no contact! Now we are just a few clicks away from the Obj…Recon reports, no contact! But it´s hard to see anything at all, US Arty. Has done a good “Smoke job” down here.
TURN 16:
My lightfooted recon is just 1 click away from the obj. now. Still no contact. Armour and Inf. Is following in their footsteps.
TURN 17:
Obj. secured, no opposition. Continueing towards Schimdt. 1pn/Co K over and out….
TURN 18:
Recon proceeding SE along road to Schimdt. 1 HT got a bit careless, ignored my orders, not to go to fast ahead and got shot up by 75mm FH..Havn´t spotted it yet..More smoke..
TURN 19:
Inf. And Recon proceeding it´s cautiously advance laying smoke as they move forward..Big applause to our mechanics!! They got the HT that hit a mine, ready to go again!
TURN 20:
Bad luck for the newly repaired HT..Just got hit by fire from a Bunker due north of Schimdt. This time not even the “Merlin” can get this baby running again LOL
Recon caught fire from a Inf. Bunker located a few clicks NW of town, one of my Bazooka teams was in a favourable position and nailed it in second attempt.! Other recon unit spotted a fortified penemy position and called in smoke from armour. Still continuing forward along the road..Where is the Ger. Armour!!??
TURN 21:
TRAP!!?? Fire from houses in Schimdt and Stug attack from small forest due E of the road. Took some Inf. Casualties and shot from Stug bounces from front armour of Sherman. Returning fire and got the Stug in first attempt!!! Still advancing behind smoke screen. 1 HT runs into a Ger. Inf. Plt and got hit by Panzerfaust! My Inf is exchanging fire with the GER in Town and Shermans laying suppressive fire. 2 of their Sqd´s are retreating! In end of turn Ger. Inf. Comes charching out of town and with my armour lined up on the hil just outside of Schimdt it´s looks like a very hazardous task they has taken! Wiped out almost 50% of them!!
TURN 22:
Still forward..Shot from a 75mm FH bounces from front armour of Sherman, return fire pins it! A bit further South a MG Bunker nails one of my recon units, had to retreat behind smoke. No doubt that I still has to proceed with outmost patience!! A lot of incoming Ger. Arty in end of turn.
TURN 23:
For every step we go forward still more Ger. Positions reveals before our eyes!! 75mm FH grenat rips of the tracks of a Sherman. Inf. Fire and fire from another Sherman nails that gun! Side hit from 81mm mortar, bazooka team wipes their noses. But still they come blazing forward and on top of that, more incomig Arty. Will it never end!!!
TURN 24:
Still they come..There must be at least 2 Plt. Charching forward right into the crossfire from my Shermans and Inf.! A moment I´d totally forgot about the 75 mm FH! Mistake!! A hit in the rear turret, but lucky me it bounces! My Recon pins that sucker ;) This turn I gave the Ger. A bloody nose, but I did not manage to advance one foot!! And time is running, maybe I has waited too long…Ger. Arty is still very active and in end of turn they hit me with all they got!! I have to do something, just standing here is murder! All my Inf. Units is pinned down! Think I’ll take the chance and race forward to try to take the obj with surprise with my armour..
TURN 25:
They did it!! Used one of the remaining Shermans to take the obj, but the other one got hit by panzerfaust and got imobL Last Ger. Obj has fallen! But can they hold on until my Inf. Arrives??
More incoming Arty.!
TURN 26:
GERMAN PANZER!! At least 2-3 PZ IV´s is approaching Didn’t get a chance to fire..The Sherman in Schmidt got hit 4 times before it went up in flames – no wonder they called it the „Ronson“ :D – My Inf. Is slowly being chewed up by Arty fire and continuing attacks from Ger Inf. Think it wiil be time to retreatL And try to hold on to what I already have gained..
TURN 27:
Not much to report this turn. All my survivors from the attack is on retreat towards the road obj further NW. A bazooka team that I´v somehow forgot about is positioned in NW of Schimdt, got a lucky shot and wacked a Panther!! :D Just hope they manage to get back in one piece!
TURN 28:
Still retreating. More Ger. Armour is showing up and the dedicated Bazooka team from last turn decides to stay in their position in a attempt to stall the Ger armour. They manage to damage one more Panther before they got wackedL
TURN 29:
All remaining units is still retreating along the road to avoid to be slaughtered. A few casualties due to gun fire from ger armour..
TURN 30:
It´s over!! US didn’t manage to get their hands on the last obj. this battle! But we will be back!
Battle result:
DRAW.
US: 122 men, 2 APC´s and 2 AFV´s . 4918 points.
GER: 261 men, 6 Arty. And 2 AFV´s. 2483 points.
