Venger -> Bug of GARGANTUAN proportions (7/24/2001 1:38:00 PM)

Played my first bit of 6.1 tonight. Decided on a Nazi assault against an American position in August of 1944. To make it fun, I chose a kind of an A-Team unit. No good guns, no tank destroyers. Nope, I took a single 3 inch gun, two 57mm guns, two 37mm guns, 2 Stuarts (yep, M3A1s), and some ground units, some rangers, airborne, and infantry, none with M9 Bazooka. For artillery, I took 3 units of 75mm only. Basically these guys had to make due with whatever they found around the place...nothing fancy or even potent. Okay, so I deploy this pathetic little force and wait for the Kaiser to bring it on. Sure enough, the first sighting is of a Tiger E. Great. Then some SturmTigers and then a bunch of halftracks. Alas, I savage the halftracks and short range, wait for the tanks to close, and whammo. Lost a single Stuart to a Tiger E that was skirting to the south. Anyways, as his offense slows to a trickle, I'd like to congratulate myself, but something just doesn't seem right...what happened to those Tiger E's that were skirting south? Hmmm. I only lose the one Stuart and 7 men while putting the wood to nearly 25 halftracks and tanks. What doesn't seem right is not that I defeated those forces, but that there should have been MUCH more in the way of forces. I saw under a dozen ground squads. Sure enough, when the battle ends, I check the map... There are 8 Tiger E's in the two bottom left hand hexes. Just bunched up there. There are nearly * FOURTY * engineer, scout, and infantry units hugging the far right line (the German side of the map). Almost as if they never moved from there. This has got to be a huge bug. I wondered why I never had to have a single infantry unit fire (well, one did, but that's it). I planned on major carnage, and somethings broken... Venger

Is this scenario or generated battle or start of the campaign ? mosh

Paul Vebber -> (7/24/2001 8:07:00 PM)

If it was a meeting engagement then the AI will sometimes leave a large reserve to wait for you to attack. If you want the AI to assault you, make sure you specify and assault scenario.

Skukko - this was a generated battle. Paul - Trust me, this was an assualt. I verified the mission while choosing my troops. And I can tell you from the points he must have spent that the only way that could happen was an assault (I had 1700 points total, and he had at least 1700 in Tiger E's alone). The hexes also were assault style - all American and on my side of the map. These were not reserves. Again, 8 Tiger E's skirted to the south, the bunched up in the two hexes at the bottom left of the screen, almost like they were trying to get to a victory hex that was off the bottom left of the map. And all the troops, again I counted 40 units, at the far right strip of hexes. Almost like they were never deployed (I mean the FAR right hexes!). I checked the units list, and it went on forever. All these SS and Engineer, and Recon, squads against the far right of the map. Like they didn't deploy... Just wanted to let someone know. I'm running Windows 2000 just in case that matters in any way shape or form... And since you're watching Paul, what's up with the FTP site? Venger

"Like they didn't deploy..." - could be Venger has something here regarding deployment, which I have also noticed. The comments apply strictly to campaigns and it is WAY too early to call it a bug or glitch, there will be a LOT more testing before I make a claim of any kind (OK, Paul?). Here is what happened: During play of Wild Bill's Hated Hurtgen Campaign (not the individual series, the campaign), I had an abrupt game termination - this was in the third of the five battles - way before the halfway point and similar to what Venger says, it was weird because although I was doing OK, the Germans were really just beginning to assault Kommerscheidt. I got a decisive, which I don't believe I truly deserved. Then when I went on to the next screen after the "Scoring", a short video played, then after I clicked Continue ANOTHER video played. Then I got the Fix/Change screen. After I fixed and upgraded the very small suport force, the next screen showed that my entire core force had disappeared, only the small "Support" force remained. I copied the save files, renamed them as scenarios, loaded the file into Editor and sure enough, the entire US core force had simply vanished. Never had anything approaching this in versions prior to 6.1, though that in itself doesn't mean the problem belongs only to the latest version. I wll say it is a quick way to end a campaign, losing your forces. I haven't replayed HH. Offered not as fuel to a fire, rather as observation. Bing

We appreciate the report and I'm sure WB will look into this, if you have something tlike this happen please let us know - there is a differenece between a report of "Aliens stole my core force" and more subjective matters like combat results. Folks should feel free to ask questions and post comments, we appreciate them and it helps make the game better, but we also try to educate players on what constitutes a "bug" and what is difference of opinion about game design. Unfortuantely Windows is not the most stable OS in the world (At least in its ME an 9X incarnations, 2K and XP are much better) this may be a game bug, or simply windows 'not playing nice' In either case knowing it happens helps us preclude its happening in teh future...

AS far as I can tell, this is not a problem of the campaign itself. It was tested both as a series and as a campaign by 12 different people and no one ever had this experience. Every tester expressed his immense pleasure in playing through either the series or the campaign from start to finish. During the testing we went from version 5.7 through version 6.1 and at no time did units disappear nor did we have strange premature endings. In fact, I personally went to great lengths to see that this did not happen using the "120" morale factor for friendly A0 units and keeping at least one objective flag for each side safe and free. I'm not doubting Bing's experience for a minute. He is a qualified gamer and has a sharp eye for detail. Just saying that I cannot find anything in the series or the campaign itself that would cause such a thing to happen. If ANYONE else has had this experience, would you let me know please? We would like to track it down. So unless
