Jotte -> Help, what game is this? (2/22/2004 3:27:18 PM)

Hi,
When I was in my teens (early 90's) a friend of mine had a game that to my memory looked very much like Advanced Squad Leader (boardgame) but in the rulebooks there was characteristics for NVA, VC and US troops in Nam, Soviet Spetsnaz, Paratroopers, Motorrifle etc and Mujahedin from Afganistan and many other cold war era OOB's.
So my question is, was this a module to SL/ASL and if so what is its name?
Or was it another but in outlook very similar game to SL/ASL?

Any help is appriciated.

"Firepower" from Avalon Hill. It was not related to SL/ASL in anyway and I would say it was the mapboards that were closest to SL/ASL in resemblence.

The only other Vietnam related title that I can recall from AH/VG was actually entitled "Vietnam" (from Victory Games) and couldn't be what your talking about.

Thats is! Thats the game! I looked it up via Google and when i saw the cover of it everything fell into place.
Thank you very much [&o], this have been nagging in my mind for some 5-6 years now.[X(]

I wonder if it is still possible to buy it?

Try ebay:

$30 Unpunched:

Or Used in Nice Condition & Complete with 11 bids:

Or Battered but only $4.99:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3177108448&category=2558

etc.

Quite a few on there actually.

I once had a near to complete Avalon Hill/Victory Games collection including all versions etc. so I am full of all sorts of more often than not useless information in these regards.

Glad I could help.

If you actually like Firepower (and yes I have owned it and it was a great game), you might also want to look ip the game Sniper also known as Hetzer Sniper and Special Forces Sniper (which I have all of).

Both of these games employ individual soldier counters, in a turn based system that uses chit draws to give a sort of randomness to the action.

Personally, when a person uses the term "Squad Leader", I think this is more in line with what the name would suggest. You command a squad.

I don't think Firepower or Sniper have any realistic competitors in board gaming.

I think Sniper was followed by a sequel - called Patrol.

Patrol was a great game and the type that would translate easily to the computer.

Of course you would need to add 1,000 features to bring it up to the level today's gamers require [:D]

Now I'm the happy owner of the game that was up for action in the 3rd link you gave Veldor. [:D] The box is a bit battered but the content is in good condition, thats what matters to me. :)

Soldiers by West End had counters representing individuals. It was a really odd system - especially dealing with morale. I'm still confused as to what to say about it. [&:]

I remember Firepower. :)
