Go here and look in tactics & faq's there is a strategy guide that covers a lot of your
questions you have been posting.

Never attack the IJN straight up in the beginning of the game as your carriers are under
strength.[:D]

ah...now I know why your US carriers are playing hide and seek...[:'(]

I've read those and have them printed. Those are good. But how to use decoys and apropriate cap settings and such..Or are those secret recipies?

A question I have that I have yet to see answered is this:

The IJN starting off have CV-based fighters and bombers with superior range to those of the Allies. The ideal situation for the IJN then would be to stand off from the Allied CV's far enough so that their air groups are out of range, but still close enough to reach the Allied CV's with the IJN attack planes. IIRC, this would be a range of 8-9 hexes.

Despite repeated attempts to maneuver into this position in both PBEM and AI games, however, I have yet to accomplish it - the Allied CV's always seem to end up close enough to hit back.

Now, I know that some of this is luck based upon any number of factors including the choice of route of the two TF's, TF commanders, reaction settings, weather, etc. However I wanted to know what tricks that IJN commanders employed to accomplish a "strike with impunity".

Redman,
A lot of it is just luck and timing. The one problem longer range has is you may be too far for torpedo attacks, and that is really the IJN's ace in the hole. I tend to play conservatively with my CVs, so I'll pick the spot I think will be a safe distance from the enemy, then I take a step back one or two hexes more to cover my a$$. This means I often end up "dancing" with my opponents TF as we both try to out-guess each other over the next day or two of battle, but I prefer that to sailing too close and receiving a USN heavy strike...

I use my japanese carriers in a conservative manner.
1. I only risk them when something can be archieved (captured).
2. I move to a spot just southeast from Rabaul and start to move south, 1 hex at a time.
If the AI (haven't played a human opponent yet), attacks, your experience will make it certain that both carriers he has in the beginning are severely damaged. The planes from Rabaul will take care of the rest. He has a much longer way home then I have to Rabaul.
allied carriers: If i play the allies, they hang around in Noumea. If the japanese try to take noumea, you might as well counterattack (again, my way home is shorter than his). Th AI won't go after Noumea anyhow.
The allied counterattack takes place in Jan. 1943 (At least that is what i have planned). Up to that time, send the escorts back to pearl to get the nice 40mm AA.
