Afrika Korps -> Just loaded up 8.1 and my spybot detector came up with this (3/10/2004 4:36:35 AM)

This was detected by my Spybot detector:

Secret-Crush: Autostart item (File, nothing done)
C:\WINDOWS\Desktop\Steel Panthers World At War Menu.lnk

Anyone else ever get this result? Strange... [X(]

I too run Spybot as well as Ad-Aware and have not had this happen to me after loading 8.1. Hmmmm...

Delete it and see if the game still runs.

This is a browser hijacker, so get rid of it. It wants to redirect your browsing to a certain page so perhaps it's corrupting as many links/bookmarks/start menu items as possible.

Some members of the French list brought back this detection[sm=00000007.gif]

There are afew kind of Anti spyware softwares. Each is good at detecting certain thing. Spy Bot and Adaware is one of the best combination. Good configuration there.

Ok, this what u do, use ur adaware and configure it to do a file to file scan... yes I know, it take such a long time but u have to find the source of that hijacker. It is not the link of Matrix but of another. Because u come to this site so often, the true hijacker detect that and infected it as a hijacker.

This is more like a the doing of "Blended threat" than a spyware to me. If ur adaware detect nothing, use ur anti-virus software and do a full scan of all files.

Normally ppl come to conculsion when they detect one file is infected with virus, and that file is the source but this is normally not the true case. There is a carrier, find that carrier, the link is only a host or a victim.

By the way, this is the defination of a "blended threat"

Blended threat: A program that combines the characteristics of viruses, worms and Trojan horses. A blended threat, like the recent Nimda outbreak, is a recent phenomenon.

I too use adaware and spybot. Have not had this problem tho. My problem is this. I dont know enough about files tho. When the programs find something wrong do you just delete what it finds. Have had adaware locate several files and i delete them. No problem so far. Ran a check with spybot and it found 2. Did not delete them yet. Was afraid i might screw up my whole comp.

Chances are chief, if it was going to screw your computer up, it would have killed a file that was going to ruin something already. Alot of this type of stuff sounds important. Update those two frequently, and trust them. I don't think they will suddenly decide that something key needs deleted.

I got the exact same thing for either Korsun Pocket or it's patch. It really ended up being strange, because I then uninstalled Korsun Pocket, reinstalled it and Spybot didn't have a problem with the new shortcut that was placed out there by KP. If you have the zip file for SPWAW still somewhere (or it's patch), if it makes you uncomfortable, you could always do what I did.

Edited to add the following: It sounds like o4r has your more technical solution, but I haven't seen ant reoccurence of my problem, but, then again, maybe a newer version of Ada-aware or Spybot got rid of what 04r was talking about. I haven't exactly installed a mother lode of programs to the computer since then so my having no further problems, if indeed it does reveal itself in new shortcuts, isn't exactly a large sample.

Ok ran both the adaware and spybot. Updated both of them first. Adaware got 33 hits deleted them first. Then ran spybot it got 7 hits fixed them too. Trusted in the programs. Got my fingers crossed. I dont go to many web pages in a week. Am here every day and to Some of my bill paying sights. In a month i think maybe 6 different boards is all. Never open any email just delete them. How does this junk get on your machine any ways. I am not an internet browser at all. Need the internet more for just here and to get updates.

Visiting any website can do it. They are probably tracking cookies? I get more than you, but I visit quite a few sites. It only takes one site though, I guess.

robot, have you installed any 'try before buy' or ad-supported programs lately? If they are from a commecial company they often contain spy or adware. sometimes it is mentioned in the license agreement, more often not.

How often do you run the programs. Every day are just once a week. Also do you know any good ones for stopping the dam viagra ads in my email. Heard somewhere about one that sends the spam back to the sender. Believe me i dont open any email that does not come from some one i know. But every day i have to go in and delete all the junk i get.

Im 73 this year and have had 2 heart operations. I dont need any thing to make me bigger or to make me virile. That is something that has gone by the wayside for me. Things that i day dream about a lot tho. [:D][:D][;)]

Never 'unsubscribe', send back, or call a phone number to cancel any spam emails. It verifies that your email address is real (they send out thousands to randomly generated addresses). Then you will be really in for it.

I run both once a week usually.

One thing you can do, if your email software allows it, is to split the bottom of the screen to view the email. I think it's called a preview (You can view without double-clicking the email this way). Anyway, the good thing about it is that it let's you view it without running the risk of opening it and the sender never knows it's been opened, since some emails you get will keep sending them if you keep opening them. I use this system and it has it's advantages over just strictly deleting things, as you know for sure this way whether the garbage really is garbage. The funny thing about this is when people get upset, if it's someone you know, who will then claim you didn't read their email, which, of course you did, but they don't get the signal back telling them it's been 'opened' therefore they think you didn't read it. At least in LotusNotes, it's one of the primary icons on the top. It's called "View Show/Hide Preview Pane", which will create a window on the bottom which you can resize for the size of the view. Clicking that same icon again will turn it back off.

Just ignore them, eventually they go away. You can block sender, and add them to your junk email too, then just mass delete the junk folder periodically. By hitting 'unsubscribe' you tell them it is a legit email address.

Newer spam emails now have a number to call to 'get them to stop bugging you'. Don't call them...

Exactly. It may even be a good idea to just move these messages into a (gigantic) "spam" folder while not deleting them. In case they have programs overwatching "message was deleted without being read" tracking. Ofcourse, it's possible to block such tracking services to (both tracking and blocking is easily controlled in Outlook)

Is there really such a thing as a program that does that (telling people it was deleted without being read)? Might that discourage them from sending them even if they are privy to such info? What complications can come from having a huge folder like that too?
