This is the Believe-it-or-Don't thread. Weirdness in war, strange happenings be it in games or for real.

1. Brothel in Africa - The US ARMY had to guard the inportant Firestone plantation in Africa. In one of the first uses of African american soldiers, something like 800 enlisted along with 20 or 30 white officers where sent there. This is in the middle of nowhere really. Only the plantation workers and the nearby villigers were around. Consequently bored G.I.'s found willing women to spend the time with. It didn't matter that some were very young and others were married, they all wanted in on the cash cow that was the Army. Now this had some bad effects, namely Very high rates of VD and the occasional homicidal spouse. Not good for public realtions. What the army did was to form 2 tent cities that were nothing but a brothel. They allowed local women to work there. It was said the average starting charge was 2$. This went up to 20$ as time went by. The men were only allowed something like 4 hours a night there. But it was something to look forward too. All this came out in 1989 when a reporter that was there at the time wrote a book about it. I just saw this on the history channel, thats how I knew. There's a lot I left out and some small inconsistancies but it just blew my mind when I first heard about it. Anyone know the book?

carnifex -> RE: Wackiness in war (3/16/2004 8:51:41 PM)

what year was that?

I'm really struggling to find some connection to Korsun Pocket in this thread.

Carnifex - Year was 1942 I think, within a year of that anyway.

Elmo3 - I was reading a thread where one guy saw the computer doing strange things. that got me to thinking .

- How would I respond to that?

- How do gamers in general handle surprises the computer throws at them (intentional or not)

and since I'm in the military it go me to thinking about all the crazy problems I've seen in my 14 years. And all the crazy ways we fixed them.

When all is said and done, we are playing a WWII history game here. I was wondering if anyone else knew some crazy stories about the Eastern front. The only example I could think of was the first post, which had nothing to do with Korsun.
So maybe it is off topic but its not like there is a plethera of post to read. I hope this helped you in your struggle.
