KING -> Has anyone played WW2 Campaign from beginning to end? (10/5/2001 2:35:00 AM)

I am just wondering has anyone ever played World War II Campaing to the end? Does it end to the battle for enemy´s capital or how it ends? Just to randomized battle? I have not, all battles takes a lot of time (from 2 to 4 hours, it´s bit too long time for me, it makes me bored ). Maybe I have too many units in battle . Well, I just like to know how campaign ends?

No,the ww2 camp ends with a normal randomed battle.It's boring?Maybe yes,but for those kind of emotions ,if i understand well your thought,u need the MEga Campaigns.The only very good thing in the ww2 camp is to see growing up your men in experience.I finished once with the brits and now i began it with germany.You learn how much the skilled troops are important in a long war. Regards

..before it's too late ....listen to my advice :
play only pre-designed campaigns unless you need a sort of very long 'training'
bye

I'm playing the WWII campaign right now, playing as the Germans, kicking English butt all over North Africa, but what I want to know is, if I play until say 01/43 in North Africa, can I start back at say...08/41 in Eastern Europe??, or only after I decide to switch from North Africa to East Front?
Thanx!!

Klaus, what I do is fight one front until another opens up, then I start a second front using the troops I have already brought up. For example, you take your core force through Poland, the Low Countries and France, then go to Libya in the spring of 1941. You fight there until May 1941, then set up for the next month in the desert. Then go back to May '41, and set up for Eastern Europe in June. I save the T0 turn and last turn for each battle, and have a block of spaces (10-39) for the current battle. It works well.

But if you think of reality this is far from it as you must consider that such manevers would be logistically impossible in such short time table.Unless whole Nazi war machine's trasportation capacities were given to only one punny Colonel in command of some elite(?) unit. In the generic WWII campaign do you get city battles and amphibious landing or anything like that? I got similiar maps in my first 14 battles.

wulfir -> (10/5/2001 6:40:00 PM)

I have always liked what in Steel Panthers I was called the Long Campaign (in SPWaW the WW2 campaign) because it allows you to build up experience. It feels good to be able to upgrade your forces, give the favourite tank crew the latest model and put it to use on the battlefield as well as watch the infantry pile up their kills. But the battles are not very varied and some might find the maps generated by the computer awkward. If so, I guess the only option is to play a designed campaign (or make one yourself). I saw a question once about the possibility of using the scenarios that comes with the game in the Campaigns and that is sort of what I did. I took all the scenarios with Germany as the first player and made an improvised campaign. It gives you a more unpredictable AI enemy and very, very nice maps to fight on.
BUT it is not historical, makes large jumps in time and often you have to use judgement when deploying because of the way the scenario was originally designed might make it possible to put your troops right on top of the enemy.

Yes if you play the Americans. Don't know about the British, it's difficult to play them. The Americans starting in Nov 41 invade, North Africa, Sicily, then France. So you get to do three invasions. If you play the Americans (Marines) in the Pacific you should get more. I don't usually play the Pacific theater, so this is only a guess.

There is something here which stands behind this issue and that I can simply call a "prompted node"..I am referring to the possibility for customized campaigns' designers to offer the player switching nodes...something like that was allowed even in SP1 !!
It's something we may have left back !
Who can remember about it ?

Warhorse -> (10/5/2001 8:19:00 PM)

I haven't finished one, but that's because I like huge campaign battles, and set them up myself, like a scenario design. That way, they aren't boring, and you can have equipment against you that would otherwise NEVER show up with the AI!! I NEVER let the AI purchaes or set up, I purchase the units for them, or supplement what it did buy, then have someone set up the AI, or do a auto deploy for them, if anything but a AI defend. And ALWAYS use larger than 100x100 maps! Someday I might get out of 1942, but I also have 5 campaigns going! German early, German '42 on, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Russia.

nexus -> (10/5/2001 9:11:00 PM)

just started a campaign as US. what bores me,too is the unit selecttion of the italy player. killing trucks and 10000 of inf. bores really. i found out,that the only dangerous weapon in this battles the italians have are the heavy breda MG´s....nasty. besides somes arty,but... the german´s offer a little more since they attack with much stug III,which pose a honest thread to my sherman´´s and lee´s. no i´m going to invade italy,i think

adantas -> (10/5/2001 10:14:00 PM)

Hi folks, I know that the Long WWII campaing can be quite boring and of course not historical.
Well, Perhaps the solution for these problems can be the long WWII campaing developed by teams.
I'm working now with a group of designers that have names like Wild Bill and Bryan Melvin and we are developing a huge campaing covering the eastern front from the Soviet perspective from 1941 to 1945 and by now something around 11 battles are finished so this kind of campaings seems to be the logical alternative to the random generated long campaing

Its not a real feature but when I find a node that I do not like, I simply quit then fall back to my last save at the end of my last scenario (made before the end of the game), play the last turn then get another follow on battle.

Kluckenbill -> (10/6/2001 3:52:00 AM)

I've played through to the end as German, US and USSR. I found that as my units experience progressed to amazing levels, it just got too easy. Right now I'm in a German campaign, its about Jan '43 and I have elite Tigers, elite Engineers (on halftracks) elite sp flak and elite sp guns (the Lorraine 150's), I think everybody is elite except my ammo trucks. For support troops, I take a bunch of recon and motorcycles (did I mention that I have recon sectioms attached to every tank?) and more artillery. I guess that brings up another problem. Since I have such good expensive stuff, the AIP gets a huge number of points with which to buy units. Since 'he' doesn't buy very wisely and they aren't as experienced they are pretty much just cannon fodder. The most aggravating thing that happens is losing one of my super tank crews to artillery or air power. I remember one battle where my Jagdtigers were dug in on a hill, they annihilated the attacking Americans with ease (no friendly losses.) Then I got pasted with 8" Howitzers and B26's (earlier version, before the generic bombers) and I lost about a quarter of my crews. I have tried to play campaigns as Italians and even Chinese, but it was just too tedious early on so I gave up.

brianleeprice -> (10/6/2001 6:16:00 AM)

I haven't made it the whole way through yet - currently invading Salermo as US Army. At first the huge numbers of units where just a bit too much for me - I'd lose interest in the huge unending battles with max unit counts - but I discovered something I didn't find in the documentation or mentioned in the various website articles (or maybe I just missed it): Turns out that if you don't spend all your points when buying your core force the campaign scales itself to the points you actually spent. So I'm playing this time 'round with a reinforced company sized force and having a blast. With my core force gaining in skill though I think I'm going to have to give the AI more points to spend and/or give it some extra oomph via the AI settings. Having C&C on makes it a bit more difficult as do some of the other realism options. The AI sometimes still makes some really stupid buy/deploy decisions (German infantry wave assault on large map with high visibility!) but, until I get v7.0 at least, when it's too stupid I sometimes just restart from the end of the previous battle. When 7.0 is available to us 'non well connected' people (hehe) I'd like to find a campaign partner to do a WWII campaign with alternating campaign player with each battle. Anyone know if you can play the 7.0 campaign via the internet that way?

Laserjet -> (10/6/2001 8:25:00 AM)

The WW2 Campaign is way too long. With 60+ battles I have never lasted past 1943 before my troops became unbeatable supermen with unlimited replacement points. Even the Brits using only British tanks can easily outfight the German AI by 1943. I would make some changes in the next SP upgrade for the WW2 Campaign. 1. Allow the human player to choose between monthly or quarterly battles. This could reduce the number of battles to about 20 if quarterly was chosen. 2. Increase the points the AI uses in buying heavy off board artillery. The AI uses artillery better than any other type of weapon. 3. Reduce by atleast 1/2 of number of replacement points received between battles. The fewer points the better. Many units went into battle short handed without the latest equipment. 4.Charge full cost for replacing lost units. Bill

5. AI should buy not SO much trucks and infantry - more armor. and everytime the same units.....

adantas Any kind of time table for release?
After having played the long campaign for every major participant since SP was first released I'm looking for something new.
I have the MC but I prefer following my units through the entire war. Thx.

No ideia yet, we are finishing the first part of the camping that covers from the begining of the german offensive till the typhoon operation (the battle for Moscow). I don't have the complete view of the campaing so it's better ask our coordinator, Mr A_B.

I have played several campaigns start to finish. When your core units start becoming "supermen" just go to preferences and scale back the settings ie. inf. toughness, tank toughness, hitting.... This gives more balance with each succeding scenario in the campaign. If you do not do this then you will be unbeatable about half way through the campaign.

RaidR -> (10/13/2001 4:12:00 PM)

I've played the german campaign to late '43 and finished the Russian campaign. - playing with low points makes it possible. most of the battles were just random generated exept for the battle of Stalingrad, where you (both as Germans and Russians) do battle in a fixed city terrain.
It was great moving al my tanks trough the streets while my infantery cleared the houses. Altough I won the battle, the next battle was another Stalingrad battle on the same map. The mission objective was different though. Another nice suprice to me, was that when playing Russians I had to do battle against the Rumanians and eventually Hungarians. The AI made very stupid purchase decisions as Hungarians, but that's probarly due to rarity and the amount of points I gave the AI to spend (to make it even, considering my troops were mostely veterans).
