timc -> Sandstorms (10/5/2001 10:51:00 PM)

I played through a long campaign as an American in ver 5.1 and noticed the old sandstorm glitch seemed to be fixed. Then I applied the 5.1 patch and am playing a long campaign as the British. I got a battle in a sandstorm in which my infantry could only move 1 hex at a time but visibility was 17. I reloaded my last end-of-battle save and got a sandstorm with visibility of 37. I reloaded again and got a sandstorm with visibility 255.
I opened the save in the editor and changed the weather and visibility (you have to click a LOT to get down from 255 visibility). That way I could continue my campaign.
I think sandstorms should affect visibility more than they affect movement. If the storm is so bad you can only walk 50 meters per turn, shouldn't visbility be limited to 50 meters?

Weather has been decoupled from visibility. Paul said that there were too many complaints about low visibility. Now visibility is linked to time of day but not the weather. As you have done, edit it.

Perhaps it was another desert occurance, instead of a real sandstorm, it might have been a plague of locusts. Disgusting to march across, but not nearly as visability reducing. Another possibilty, is that the sandstorm just ended and there is loose shifting sand all around which reduces movement, but the sand is no longer blowing through the air. My sandstorm battles (German and British campaigns) were at 3-4 vis, so count yourself lucky, nothing like coming up next to a tank before you see it.
thanks, John.

255? I've never seen anything above 58 since the changes.

Oops. My original message should have read 6.1 patch.
OK. Understand weather is decoupled from visibility. Myself, I like low-vis battles against the AI under many circumstances. I can adjust my tactics, the poor AI doesn't.
Thanks, everyone.

timc: I was referring to V6.1 too. You must've really hit a fluke with 255. I've had times where I loaded a prior camapign battle, finished that battle, and then decided to restart the campaign with the same nation, to fight the first battle over again, only to find that this new camapign kept the results of the losses from the abandoned campaign's first battle. I had to reboot the computer to get it to stop doing that. Maybe all I had to do was drop the game and restart the game, but perhaps that's the sort of thing you had happen with that visibility. I have to question whether the game is sound when you play a long camapign and then redo a battle with the same nation, without either rebooting or dropping the game inbetween.
