Irsmert -> 2 *really* intereasting questions (4/7/2004 8:20:23 PM)

As one of your neighborhood noobies, I feel obliged to ask a few questions [;)]:

1. What is the difference between the long campaign and the WW2 campaign?

2. What would really have a bigger explosion, a 81mm mortar, or a 75mm howitzar?

Well Hopefully someone will be kind enough to help me out here.

The first question's answer is this:

When SP1 first rolled out ages ago, you could either play a campaign covering a specific time frame, such as The Destruction of Army Group Center, which was set up to be done from the Russian side and was from about mid 1944 till wars end, IIRC, or the long campaign which let you pick which side you would command from that nations entry point till the end of hostilities.

With SPWaW, you get 2 choices for what would be considered a "long" campaign... the WW2 campaign where you can now choose the starting point of the campaign and the nationality you command, and the campaign generator where you choose a side to command, up to 3 opposing nationalities, and IIRC the number of battles as well as start and end dates. The WW2 campaign will tend to flow along more historical lines than the generated ones.

I'd have to look in the editor or encyclopedia to see what size "explosion" comes with those other 2.

Thanks for the explination about the campaigns. I looked in the encylopedia, and found that the 81mm mortar has an explosive radius of 5 and the 75mm has 4. But what I was really questioning was that should an 81mm mortar have a bigger explosion then the 75mm howitzer. Mabie this one should have been in the B & M about the OOBs thread?

Irsmert, afaik an 81mm mortar round and a 75mm arty round have *roughly* similar explosive content. Say half a kilo or bit more. In some cases 81mm mortar round may have 2 kilos of explosive. At least US had this sort of 'large capacity' round. Also the fragmentation patterns are different. Mortar round tends to spray splinters more evenly around the impact point while and arty round tends to spray most fragments sideways..say 70%, then maybe 20% forward and only 10% or so towards the direction where the round was fired. Btw, those numbers aren't exactly the blast radius, but warhead size.
Anyways, given the more uniform dispersal of splinters size 5 for a mortar round might actually be ok?
