*Lava* -> What is "lexplore" (4/10/2004 3:41:59 PM)

Hi!

I've been having some problems with my internet explorer recently. When I check to see what programs my computer is running I ran into a program called "lexplore." I did a search of my PC for the program and also a virus check but came up empty handed.

Anybody have any ideas what this is?

Hi!

Hmm.. appears to be a trojan of some sort, probably spyware. Anybody have any experience with this or recommendations.

This one, I'm afraid, can be something of a bugger. The good news is that it's a very well known problem, so there are answers.

It's caused by corruption of Internet Explorer files, but there are a multitude of different causes (including assorted trojans and spyware), and a multitude of different errors.

First up, download and run Spybot S&D, to clear out all the crap. It's a super program, well worth running every week or so. You won't believe how much unwanted rubbish can accumulate on your comp.

If that doesn't work, do a google search on "lexplore". You'll find lots of problems, and answers. You just need to find the one that corresponds to your error. There will hopefully be a quick solution, but sometimes a re-install of IE, or even of the whole system may be required.

Hi!

Thanks for responding.

In my case I had 2 files placed into my puter: precontrol.exe and winrar.exe

My symptoms are a laggy explorer and sometimes a freeze of my computer. I get no error messages. I did goggle around and it seems most people usually get errors associated with the worm. Messing around a bit, I found I can simply eliminate precontrol.exe with no effect to my system. Winrar.exe, which I understand not only is a compression program but also modifies Explorer files, is another matter. Explorer will not function at all without the file. My research indicates that a reinstall of IE should fix the problem.

Being self taught, and not very bright, I must admit I have never reinstalled IE before. I have IE6 saved away in a folder. I'm afraid that if I eliminate IE from my computer and then try to reinstall what I may find out is that the IE6 exe that I have is merely an upgrade and therefore won't work. (I'm I sounding stupid here?) Shouldn't I also be able to reinstall IE from my windows 98SE disc? Dunno.. I'm a little hesitant.

As for Spybot, thanks for the recommendation. I have looked over their site but unsure if it would correct the problem. However, it sounds like it is "generally" a nice little utility to use to clean things up.

Thanks again for your response.

Iexplore is the internal name of Internet Explorer.

Okay, first of it it a capital "i" at the beginning or a capital "l" in the word "lexplore". sometimes that hard to make out in the task manager.

if itīs clearly with an capital "l" then check this here, you have sucessfully installed the SODABOT virus [;)]

People, get a decent virus scanner and firewall ! Itīs sad how often one has to mention this.

Go to http://aumha.org/a/noads.htm (the page will screen for Adware, Spyware, Scumware, Diallers, Jackers
and other unsolicited commercial software in your browser)

And please download and install Ad-aware and spybot. After that follow Marc his tips [;)]
