funkiwi -> funkiwi vs hellcat (4/20/2004 3:48:17 AM)

This time Hellcat is on the other side of the fence, in this minor battle of the Russo-American War of '45. Incidentally, the war started when the great Russian prophet (Stalin's secret lover), Smashya Smirkov predicted that the United States would some day try to rule the world. Jack Daniels or Stolichnaya, what would it be?

The map: Ukraine Fog (page 3 in the archives, I believe). Who made this awesome map?!

hellcat -> RE: funkiwi vs hellcat (4/20/2004 4:01:40 AM)

I'm the yanks and the fog map is very cool... Vis only 7. We've already run into a worrying amount of snipers! [X(] and dispatched them. Some of our Halftracks are burning after running into heavy duty T34/85s I think they were... enemy has quite a lot of recon out there...

Victory Hexes are per turn hexes I notice! But it's to the death anyhow...

hellcat -> RE: funkiwi vs hellcat (4/20/2004 4:46:13 AM)

Oh yes, this is 4500 points... we're not having reinforcements due to fact it's one of those maps with entry zones at the wrong end... this will also mean we're likely to retreat in the wrong direction...

it's all happening fast... some of my airborne guys drop in on the russian rear area and destroy enemy arty. Also Ranger infiltrate at the same time and catch enemy engineers in the process of laying mines...

enemy tanks have been shooting up our men in some horrendous scenes in amongst the thick fog, we nail one of them with a Jackson (rarity is on and I couldn't take hellcats [:(])

Our arty falls hard and fast on anything we can spot in the fog...

The Russian commander is turning beetroot faced already - how dare those insolent dogs operating the Katyushas and the 160mm mortars go to sleep! I haven't been able to use any arty since the first round! Meanwhile, the yanks have the luxury of M7 Priests and 60mm mortars, available to them under the sly guise of 'armor'.

Word of advice: you don't want to be laying a cable when the rangers creep upon you! [8|]

Things aren't going so well. Need a vodka top up.

hellcat -> RE: funkiwi vs hellcat (4/20/2004 6:00:38 AM)

Goblin taught me everything I know (but not everything he knows [&o]) about handling US forces. The fast arty and m9 bazooka are both weapons of choice.

I've also been lucky with infiltrating rangers as most of them [X(] appeared early [X(][X(]

We pop another T34/85 and it only took 3 Jacksons to do it (at 2 hex range!) [:-]

I'm rapidly running out of mechanised infantry [:-]

this is nasssssssteeeeey

funkiwi -> RE: funkiwi vs hellcat (4/20/2004 6:27:08 AM)

If I had purchased fire support more wisely I could have done twice as much damage, maybe more. My arty is non-existant. I notice US has combat teams available with huge fire support options. BM-31 Katyushas seem way over priced. This is one slow reaction force I'm controlling. Next time, 10,000 pts eh, hellcat??

hellcat -> RE: funkiwi vs hellcat (4/20/2004 7:23:45 AM)

for sure!

i lost 2 wolverines to the same tank[:-], which has now gone phew!

some russian arty is coming in now...

(priests do count as an arty option not armor)

paras and rangers running amok in enemy rear areas! [8D]

funkiwi -> RE: funkiwi vs hellcat (4/20/2004 8:01:36 AM)

Ah, but you can buy Priests as part of the combat team option in the Armor section. i've never seen so many mortar rounds flying around! this must be shellshock [8|]

minefield -> RE: funkiwi vs hellcat (4/20/2004 2:26:17 PM)

Hellcat is right. Priests are SPA. They are under artillery. They carry 105mm rounds. It has a nice 'pulpit' for the spotter to sit in and look for targets...
Even if they are part of a combat group, hellcat is saying he is taking them into account for his total artillery points.
I agree with you about rockets. I haven't been able to use them with great effectiveness.

hellcat -> RE: funkiwi vs hellcat (4/20/2004 9:27:40 PM)

I got mine from Arty yes, rarity on narrowed my options and I'd already bought enough mortars [:D] US Arty is a real doozy as it comes in before the enemy can move more often than not. We did set our arty total quite high initial no limit then 20-15% I've noticed most ppl play with 10% arty these days and even that packs a punch at these points...

think of this one as a 'learner' much like my first games vs Goblin when he played USA...

btw - that smg unit wasn't wasted in 2 ranger shots (although I'm sure that can happen) but they were standing on a wooden bridge and it went and the smg guys went with it! [:D]

interesting point about rockets... I'll start a thread about this as I'd be interested to see who has mastered them and how. I'm always tempted to take them and often do, but rarely manage to put them to good use...

funkiwi -> RE: funkiwi vs hellcat (4/20/2004 11:12:51 PM)

i'd imagine the best way to use the rockets is to use them on targets directly, especially the earlier models, instead of using the FO, or to keep an ammo truck handy.

as for hellcats overwhelming arty superiority, i wasn't too worried. my infilTRAITORS were just starting to make it to there assigned positions. i had about 2 dozen squads of partizans and sappers and they were about to unleash pure hell on the US rear positions. unfortunately, the game stopped loading properly and we had to abandon! lesson: next time i should keep a copy of the last files i receive before modifying them.
game over

funkiwi -> RE: funkiwi vs hellcat (4/21/2004 12:05:25 AM)

Whoops, we got the game going again. Just kidding about those partisans, Hellkat ;)

Isn't it bizarre how whenever you have to replay a turn all your shots miss the second time round???

About those rockets. Katyushas were Heroes of the Motherland, reverred by the Russians. They even wrote a song after then, "Katyusha". At least I think it's about the rockets. I could be mistaken. It might be about a woman, but I'll post a translation I made with Babelfish and let you be the judge.

Katyusha rocket launcher Apple trees and pears bloomed, the fogs above the river floated... Left to the coast Katyusha rocket launcher, on the high, to the coast the steep. It left, song it started about the steppe dove-coloured eagle, about that, which it loved, about that, whose letters coast. Oy you, the song of pesen'ka maidenly, you fly after the clear sun following I to soldier on distant progranich'e from the Katyusha rocket launcher transmit regards. Let he recall girl simple, let it hear, as it sings, let it the earth take care native, A love Katyusha rocket launcher will take care. Apple trees and pears bloomed, the fogs above the river floated... Left to the coast Katyusha rocket launcher, on the high, to the coast the steep.

funkiwi -> RE: funkiwi vs hellcat (4/21/2004 12:08:28 AM)

It could be that the Babelfish translator has Katyusha meaning rocket launcher, or it could be that after the war they decided to take the black humour out of this romantic song. I guess the former is correct. Here is a more poetic translation:

Katiusha
Apple and pear trees were blooming,
Fog crept along the river...
Katiusha came out onto the bank,
Onto the high, steep bank.
She came out and started a song
About a grey-blue eagle of the steppe,
About the one that she loved,
About the one, whose letters she cherished.
Oh, you, song, young maiden's song,
Fly out, follow after the clear sun
And tell the warrior at the distant border-post
That Katiusha sends him her greetings.
Let him remember a simple maiden,
Let him hear how she sings,
Let him protect the Motherland
And Katiusha will cherish love.
Apple and pear trees were blooming,
Fog crept along the river...
Katiusha came out onto the bank,
Onto the high, steep bank.

funkiwi -> RE: funkiwi vs hellcat (4/21/2004 12:09:37 AM)

No, second thoughts, I'm convinced it's about the rocket launcher. (funkiwi)

Belisarius -> RE: funkiwi vs hellcat (4/21/2004 12:18:44 AM)

Believe me, any Katyusha over BM-8 is worth it's price once it gets around to actually fire. Don't be at the recieving end of a volley of 3-4 of those hellspawn.

funkiwi -> RE: funkiwi vs hellcat (4/21/2004 1:04:10 AM)

Yeah, I've noticed that even being at the non-receiving end can be dangerous. [sm=00000959.gif]
