Excellent so far. would an invasion of Darwin be more risker then Port Morsbey? (not trying for all of OZ, just that base) For the Japs Darwin would be in range of timor's airfield and others? and isn't it non-malaria and closer to there supplys. don't know if it would work or not, but would be interesting.

One hopes the Japs
are faced with realistic garrisoning requirements to keep this from getting too far out
of hand, but it's not an idea that is going to get howls of protest from me....

Now here's an interesting point. If the Japanese take an Allied city/town with a significant population, like Manila or Darwin or Singapore, etc., and then leave no troops there (no garrison), does WitP model the possibility of a REVOLT (with the consequent loss of any industries/resources there)?

Nikademus -> RE: Me no understand... (5/1/2004 12:15:22 AM)

WitP does not model 2nd line or garrison troops for either side. Closest you get is Chinese partisans.

What does [:o] mean?

It makes about as much sense as [sm=00000613.gif], which I don't get.

Are you [:-] me? Or are you [sm=00000023.gif]?

Whatever it means, I hope you are either [:D] or [;)] and not [sm=00000055.gif]

Sorry, didn't mean to make everyone [>:]. I was just [&:].

Luskan -> RE: Me no understand... (5/1/2004 5:19:29 AM)

Mike - the isolation of Darwin is the australian's biggest problem. If you land enough troops (and are willing to sacrifice a percentage to the coastal defences and the forts) and you can swarm the place and take it - sit around for a month on your ass, and then bail the important inf units out long before any of the messed up Oz units at home can get to Darwin (and when they do get there, they've been on the road for weeks!).

Yes, Darwin is on the objective list - however that operation won't be mounted until Dandriff has succeeded or failed.

This morning's turn was a gem. To begin with almost all forces are in position for operation dandriff all over the map. This is excellent news. In china, Raver's chinese troops at Yenen put up a stalwart defence against me renewed assault (lots of reinforcements had arrived) and although it cost me a thousand troops, I drove him out into the northern wilderness. My troops will chase Raver's troops up the road to the next base - but after that I'll have to stop, supply line, length of my defences and of course - the fact that there isn't really any further to go in the north. The reason Yenen took so long to take is simple - in the first game where I snatche dit early, I literally ronuded up every IJA inf unit in a 300 mile radius and off they went. This time, I have left at least a division or very large regiment at EVERY BASE in china, a: to prevent partisans, and b: to ensure Raver's chinese don't try and slip through the lines. This is also why hangchow took so long to take . . . but take it I did this turn as well, driving thousands of cinese down the road to Wuchow (and best of all, my troops followed them down the road!). A garrison is on its way to hangchow with eng, art and a smaller, fresh regiment, while my army will chase Raver's troops past Canton to Wuchow.

Once Wuchow falls, I can easily snatch Ichang, and have cleared almost all the dangerous sized airfields in range of japan. Pushing back inland from the Canton/hanoi railway won't be so easy - but it depends how many of Raver's troops escape.Fortunately I am also garrisoning every hex of railway to have a continuous defensive line.

In more good news, my newly landed eng and art units in malaya reached alor star and proved the difference, pushing Raver's troops out (although in all three "victories" my armies have claimed this turn, in each case, taking the base has cost me more troops than it did Raver). Raver's troops are retreating to Georgetown, and my troops will take a couple of turns to recoup, rest and prepare for the next step in the drive (and of course, again, wait for the garrison to arrive before they leave) before moving on down the peninsula in pursiut. A few small units from Kuantan are gonig to rty and reach malacca and cut off georgetown and KL from singapore - but I timed it badly - I don't think I can get there before Raver's troops slip by on their way south.

Raver has spotted my little build up at Vigan - and the 65th Brigade moving towards Tugeragao to uphold the fighting there (I'm actually loosing more men that Raver there at each turn. Not very many - but enough to be disheartening). As long as I have the strength there to make Raver's life a problem if he retreats from his forts, I'm happy. Especially since My troops at naga are receiving reinforcements very very soon.

Where is Kido Butai the world wonders?? Well, it has had a few adys off (like all my cvs over the last few turns). They are in position and ready for Dandriff, which should begin in two or three turns (although it will take more than a week before Raver sees it coming).

mogami -> RE: Me no understand... (5/1/2004 5:31:55 AM)

(for those without a dictionary Dandriff means swift.)

Raverdave -> RE: Me no understand... (5/1/2004 5:52:01 AM)

I am of the opinion that Darwin and Derby and Broome are a "must-take" for the IJN.......if they don't take Darwin then the allied player has a spring board for Timor....it is the domino effect, once the allies take Timor than they can move onto X. But if the allied player has to first re take Darwin, well that is going to require a full invasion that will have no air support except with what ever CV the allied player can muster. Sure the Allies could always march troops up from Alice Springs, but it is a bloody long way, and by the time they march there they are going to be exhusted. For the IJN player it is all win win. Having Darwin denies the allies a spring board, you can support the place well from the DEI and with the support of Timor can make the allied player pay dearly for any attemp to retake it....all for the low cost of a small "ish" garrison.

Luskan -> RE: Me no understand... (5/1/2004 11:50:50 AM)

Another vicious turn's pacific fighting. Raver's bombers consistently do better and better every turn - they often doa bit better than the combat report suggests.

First up this turn, 4 of Raver's chinese INF units attacked hangchow (empty) because my troops had all pursued Raver's retreating units down the railroad -so they captured it. Never mind - I slaughtered another couple of thousand of Raver's retreating troops - my troops are still in supply and Raver's troops at hangchow are cut off and will not represent a problem (there just aren't enough of them).

Raver's remnants of troops on mindanao are starving and cut off - although there are more survivors than I had believed. I'll have them surrender fairly soon.

My troops headed up the Burmese coast have kciked Raver's retreating troops back up the road.

Operation Dandriff (originally I meant to call it this but mispelt it) has been approved for stage one and has launched. Sooner or later Raver is going to spot a few things happening in different spots on the map and he's going to react. How soon he spots it, and how fast he reacts will decide whether or not we go to stage 2.

Why not change the name to Operation Snowjob? [8D]

Whoa..... down there Mike. I wouldnt be so hasty as to include Ceylon in that group. Ceylon was both operationally and logistically doable. The IJN staff did the peliminarly planning for it back in Feb.42, and concluded it would be possible with the Southern Area Army reserves and assets and shipping already in the SRA. It would have had to been attempted immediatley following the SRA campaign in the March/April/May 42 time frame.

And before you say it. NO it would not have caused mass starvation in Japan.

Yes, the Imperial Japanese NAVY's staff planned several "long-ranged" operations during
that time..., and the Imperial Japanese ARMY's staff told them they didn't have the troops
for them. He11, the IJN's staff was still planning offensives to capture New Caledonia
and the Fiji's AFTER Guadalcanal was lost. Realistically, the troops and support for such
operations just weren't available. Look at the miserable time the Japanese had trying
to supply the Army on Guadalcanal from Rabaul in 1942. And you think they can main-
tain an Army on Ceylon from Singapore? Japanese "planning" took a "nose-dive" as soon
as the carefully crafted pre-war operations were completed. From then on almost every
plan was either a "pipe dream" or a failure.

mogami -> RE: Me no understand... (5/1/2004 5:55:37 PM)

Hi, There is a really funny thing about "troop availbility"

High Commands never have troops to spare before a situation is hopeless.

(look at all the divisions the Japanese allow to be cut off in the Solomons and New Guniea and how many troops Hitler sent to Africa at the end)

tsimmonds -> RE: Me no understand... (5/1/2004 5:57:26 PM)

quote:

But was that due more to the difficulties inherent in the contemplated operations, or to the screwedup command structure that had the IJN and IJA each basically fighting its own war? The IJA just wasn't interested in anything much besides its continental operations, and it certainly didn't need the IJN's help with anything it was planning to do (or so it seemed to them at the time--keeping the US at bay for a few more years might have been useful to the IJA as it turned out). IJN on the other hand, needed IJA's troops for just about any operation it could conceive....except Midway....

norsemanjs -> RE: Me no understand... (5/1/2004 8:28:08 PM)

Thanks for the fun ARR guys!

It feels like the Chinese operations happen much quicker than I would expect. These relatively large land battles over a poor transportation system should be much more drawn out affairs shouldn't they?

Anyone have any dates of actual ops to justify the quik moves we've been seeing in these AAR's

norsemanjs -> RE: Me no understand... (5/1/2004 8:32:10 PM)

By the way, my guess is that the upcoming TOP SECRET operation is against ceylon/India.

Anyone else want to venture a guess?

Raverdave -> RE: Me no understand... (5/2/2004 3:23:26 AM)

I have no idea what Luskan is talking about....his is under real threat in China as you can see from the map. The 33rd Army group has retaken Keweilin thus cutting off supply from his troops that are chasing me. Changsha is cut from Nanchang and I have more troops moving to cut the other supply route into Changsha as well of some troops moving to stop supplies coming out of Canton. (however having posted this map Luskan now knows where I am and what I am doing but in the interest of keeping you all informed I thought I would post the map).

My CVs have ecsaped the net of Luskan's subs and are now racing north to cause some mayhem where he least expects it. It is going to feel nice sinking some of his exposed ships![:)]

reminds me of Murphys laws of combat.

If you are short of everything except enemies, you are in combat!

if both sides think they are loosing, they are probably both right!

(there are several others, but i don't remember)

...wait
FRIENDLY FIRE, ISN'T!!!!!

Luskan -> RE: Me no understand... (5/2/2004 10:01:31 AM)

Poor misguided Raver. Where arehis cvs? no idea. But as for where his troops in china are headed . . . It doesn't matter - I've got troops in every hex of railway. I've penetrated his lines better than he has mine - his troops will be the cut off ones, not mine (because none of my troops are on his map.

I expected this.

Operation dandriff was stalled (I realised) but I've fixed it up and we're underway again. Raver will see a few things in this turn's combat replay that he'll wonder at. I sort of hoping his cvs come up to Darwin and then north - but I think he knows that the area will be a little too hot to risk his CVs in the future so he wouldn't risk it. I have sent the turn - but won't spoil all the surprises.
