wulfir -> Designating Units? (11/10/2001 7:24:00 AM)

When playing I like to name my units, because it adds a little extra spice and I have found that after the `painfulī process of naming every unit I’m slightly more careful with the way I use them. What I’d like to know is the proper (WWII) unit designation system for the various countries in the game and what abbreviations that were used. Things like:
How would First Rifle Squad/First Platoon/Baker Company be designated in abbreviated form? 1Sqd/1Plt/BCo?
1Sect/1Plt/BCoy?
1Grp/1Zug/2Kp? Also stuff like:
Designations for the infantry AT team? Did the British give all platoons in the battalion their own number? Did the Commonwealth forces copy the British system? In the Finnish infantry battalion was the 4th Company always the MG Company? How do you designate the Company HQ unit?

Good post. I hope there is some input on this. I name my A0 unit Soviet Command, US Command, etc. Or I'd name it Soviet Batt Cmd or something similar. As for, say, a company commander of infantry, I'd name it '1st CO Cmd' or something like that. I used to do the 1Plt/2Co thing and may get back into doing it. I would, however, like to know the German, Soviet, and British manner of unit designations. And someone could throw I-talian stuff in there, too - I guess....

David Boutwell is the man to contact. He does strictly historical scenarios, and would know the best way. Personally, I don't much like the practice, since in the heat of battle I don't want to have to be right-clicking to see what sort of weapon I'll be firing at the enemy.

Use what fits. I usually use, if I rename them, the following. A0 - Bn HQ B0 - HQ 1Pn/CoA
B1 - 1S/1Pn/A (1st Squad,1st Platoon, A Co)
B2 - 2S/1Pn/A
B3 - 3S/1Pn/A
B4 - MMG Team/A
B5 - Recon/1Pn/A And so forth. Easy to read and it fits..WB

I just used Fred Chandla's WaWED to alter all of my unit's designations. Very easy and you can do copy/paste stuff, too. Here's what I did: I had 3 companies of US Rifle Inf (gonna get those Reds in Victors now!) as well as 2 companies of Rangers. A0 = Battalion Cmd B0 = 1st Co. Command C0 = 1st Plat>1st Co
C1 = 1st Plat>1st Co
C2 = 1st Plat>1st Co
C3 = 1st Plat>1st Co D0 = 2nd Plat>1st Co
etc, etc... I don't name the squads as the C0, C1, C2 is automatically there and easy to reference. I name other stuff: Inf-AT>1st Co
MMG>1st Co (or alternately: MMG1>1st Co)
M2 Mtr>1st Co Then for the Rangers: W0 = 1st Ranger Cmd Y0 = A Sec>1st Rngr
Y1 = B Sec>1st Rngr
Y2 = C Sec>1st Rngr
etc.. Hope that helps and gives some idea of what can be done. Important thing to strive for---> consistentcy and 15 letters or less!

I use a basic CO/Plt/Sqd nomenclature (A/2/3) For support weapons I use Co/Plt/Weap (A/1/MG or A/3/Mtr). For Co level or Bn level support I use the level/type/id (A CO = A/AT/1, Bn Art/2) I don't bother naming the support gear not part of my core units. They aren't going to be around long enough that I'll need to remember what squad or crew has the best experience for a job.

Ahem, doesn't this give enemy too much information, if used while playing PBEM? Colonel von Blitz

Clever! Why didn’t I think of that? Well, I guess you learn something new every day!

Interesting, that’s a lot of infantry. Are you using your Rangers to infiltrate in order to get the objectives on the far side of the map?

Not a problem for me. I know them by hart.

Sound advice. I have been using standard Swedish army designations but it doesn’t really feel right. Especially not on my Soviet troops.

Is that US practice, company first, then platoon and finally squad?

I think you can fool your opponent plenty with using false designations. Say you have one rifle company and name the first two platoons as part of A Co and the rest as B Co. Alter the name of the A0 unit when you bring it forward. Change your name of the ordinary engineer sqd into something that doesn’t exist – what the…my tank got nailed by Sturmpioniere! Who are those guys? When playing a human opponent, never be predictable, especially not in the way you designate your troops.
