I seem to recall many moons back some threads indicating problems getting rubber rafts to deploy. Is this a known systemic problem? The question is prompted by the fact that while a buddy and I were playing Jess's outstanding (truly outstanding!) Market Garden pbem, at around turn 38, and from then on, all the allied rubber rafts just wouldn't work. Obviously it put a real crimp in his plans, but he didn't tell me and soldiered on through all 60 turns and got a draw in spite of it.

Before we switch sides and try it again, we'd like to know if we're likely to encounter that same glitch.

btw ... we're still using ver 7.1, if that's a factor.

Thanks for any insight.

[:'(] They got all the rubber raft but they forgot to bring along a pump, so initially they use manual method to blow the raft up by mouth but later they got so tired, they just could not do it again. [&o]

It could be that you reached the unit limit for the battle. I think you can only have about 400 units combined on the map. Market Garden is a big battle, IIRC, so the computer may have simply been incapable of allowing more units to be "created" on the map.

To rbrunsman ... Aha! I do recall Jess saying that he went to the limit in putting units into the scenario. I would assume then, that losses of units after the scenario begins has no effect on this since unit slots are established in the scenario design itself.

Sounds reasonable ... thanks!

To o4r ... that's exactly the sort of insightful response I give to people when they ask me questions ... my chuckle for the day ... [;)]

chief -> RE: Rubber Rafts Refusing to Get Wet (5/12/2004 11:33:01 PM)

Xeno think of excess troops this way.....400 units on field of battle, at beginning,....one unit = tank (Tank has 5 crew)...tank gets hit, crew bails, now problem occurs, 404 units are now on battle field or not. This goes on and on and does causes random problems, what exactly I haven't been able to prove. Imagine 400 loaded HTs and one has to bail............get the picture[:D][X(]

HTH[;)][8D]

cadmus -> RE: Rubber Rafts Refusing to Get Wet (5/13/2004 12:21:45 AM)

Thanks, Chief. Got it! I'm going to count the unit slots occupied at the beginning of the scenario tonight to confirm.

Now Im confused...

When crews bail out of a tank, they bail out as one unit, do they not? The unit has 5 crewmen, maybe, but they are only one "unit"...just like the tank was. Otherwise, a single infantry squad with 10 riflemen would be ten units. Is this right?

rbrunsman -> RE: Rubber Rafts Refusing to Get Wet (5/14/2004 1:03:57 AM)

Warmonger, you are correct. One unit is one unit, no matter how many men are in it. Otherwise, you'd reach the 400 UNIT limit quickly in a Japanese battle.

I think Chief was just having a small lapse of reasoning. [:'(]

VikingNo2 -> RE: Rubber Rafts Refusing to Get Wet (5/14/2004 2:41:43 AM)

Chief was having a Navy moment, Marine way kill 400 of the enemy so he can get you 400 more targets[:D][:D]

Just kidding Chief and Chief are you a Shellbacker ?

Rman is correct, the scenario reached its unit limit
