Big thank you to all those people who have helped me with this game. Guess the least I can do is give a little back. Only discovered this today, though for all i know it`s common knowledge but here goes anyway....

Retirement allowed- great feature to use when you want to pull your TF back out of enemy aircraft range. But isn`t it annoying when it pulls your TF half way across the map in wrong direction from action. Useful trick I discovered this morning was that once you set destination hex change homebase. By picking base east of you, your TF retreats that direction, pick northern base it retreats that direction . But it doestn`t have to be a base as such. You can pick a beach or small island as long as your "dot" is on it. For IJN forces around Lunga these means you can decide exactly where you want your TF to end it`s turn, as there are so many red "dots". And so you pull ships exactly the 1 hex outside enemy aircraft range that you need, putting you in good counter attacking position. You can also then arrange for replentishment TF`s and re-inforcements to end turn there and get back into fight quicker. And you can pull convoys into same hex as CVs to benefit from CAP. Amazing that something so simple can give you so much more control over your TF`s.

Yes, a good technique.

But the caveat is to ensure the enemy cannot hit that dot with LBA. That can be bad.....

(Nells and Bettys will travel a long way in good weather to strike an "unprotected" TF in a dot.......)

One thing I have found is that most of the time when you set a bombard mission the admirals will put the TF just at the max range so they will rush in at night do their business and escape with little reprisal. However, I have also seen the puter do just the opposite and get as close as they can and get trashed by LBA the day before they hit. I have started putting my TF's on patrol and selecting the destination hex that I wan't to jump off from then switch to retirement allowed. REMEMBER to do that, if you don't then that TF will stay in the destination hex and most likely get pounded.

Just out of interest how does enemy Nells and Betties know when TF in unprotected from air attack? Let my CV aircraft rest because of weather forecast and 8 of them attacked from miles away with no escort and slammed torp. into CV Saratoga. Yet this would never happen if CAP is up. Damn sure I can`t tell if enemy has CAP up and how strong it is so is AI cheating?

the AI cheats, never leave your CV's unprotected

It is related to detection level in a way. If you are "spotted" without CAP, you are meat for Nells and Bettys.

Remember that their range is greatly increased when they attack TFs at a base/beach(dot).

Most Allied players at one time or another who rested CAP at Cairns has had the reminder come from Rabaul about not doing that when a TF visiting.

Learnt that the hard way!

Now one of the p400 sqaudrens spends the whole campaign parked there flying cap!
