Not a bug nor a joke, Phil. That would be mirthless humor.
In the bigger picture, ground is taken and then has to be retaken. This was never more true than in the deserts of North Africa.
With so much room to maneuver, holding ground was not an easy thing.
It is entirely conceivable That you have gotten a victory of sorts and then been faced with a new situation in the same area.
A lot of where you go in a Mega Campaign depends on how well you do. If you do very well, you will fight a lot of battles, often over the same ground.
If not, you may miss some battles. I'm not real sure without looking at which specific battles you mention but I will look at them.
You will see the same thing happening occasionally in Lost Victories and also the Guadalcanal campaign. There were three Battles of the Matanikau before it was decided once and for all. Kharkov changed hands at least four times during the War in the East.
Hamburger Hill, Pork Chop Hill, etc, were all battlefields taken and then retaken.
Such are the fortunes of war, my friend.
