Ok is anyone here not aware of what Bit Torrents is?

http://www.bitconjurer.org/BitTorrent/

Now you know where to get it, now here is why.

420 megs of download times a looooooot of users is a loooooot of bandwidth right?

And if that file is coming from one source, then only one source is offering it right?

How does everyone here like looooooong ine ups?

No?

Thought not.

Official business uses of Bit torrents exist. These ain't that virus ridden spy ware soaked stupid Kazaa people. Bit torrents is about people helping people.

And if you want to help, great :)

Steel Panthers is just a free download right? So it doesn't matter who gives it to you, just so long as you can get it right?

But it's a laaaaaaaaaaarge file. The faster and easier the better right?

That's why Bit Torrents rocks. Because I can download several hundred megs of Torrent files in a fraction of the time I can download aparently small files using ordinary methods.

And even if ordinary methods can be fast too, one source means one guy gets to pay.

David, you enjoying flipping for the whole cost of the downloads? No, I didn't think so.

Want the community to shoulder some of that bandwidth cost?

Bit Torrents lets that happen.

If you want those groups like Gamershell to circulate the files, fine, but tell them to circulate them as Bit Torrent files as well. It shoudl make a whoooooooole lot of difference the day you send out 8.2

Or do you just want to do all the work for us :) ?

Just a note:

I personally love bittorrent, and wish it was more widespread, but unfortunately the early adopters were mostly people using it for illegal purposes. As such many ISPs and college networks block torrent traffic, but you never know until you try it.

Valid comment.

My reply, initially most uses of the internet have been to download porn. Currently most adult males that like women look at porn. Most computers that use the internet have been exposed to porn.

It is possible we should shut down the net, it's just a vehicle for porn.

Well no not exactly :)

That people can use Bit Torrents for downloading stuff illegally is as obvious as it gets.
Cars are used in roberies too. Thus that argument also falls apart.

A Bit Torrent form file of the Steel Panthers program does not require a person log into any communal program of the sort like Kazaa (which regardless of PR is about pirated programs).
A Bit Torrent file is like MP3, it's just the format the file uses nothing more.

I offered this notion initially over at Battlefront by the way, it got locked down immediately with no comment beyond "We won't be using this". Which really only makes me say, "Ok don't expect Les to care if you run short of cash in the future, not my problem:.

This is all about me wanting to cut the site some slack where finances are concerned. Steel Panthers 8.2 when it is released WON'T BE FREE people. It's going to cost SOMEONE money don't you forget it.

Maybe Bit Torrents won't be the best solution or the only solution, but I mention it with good intent.

I am hoping to hear back from the Official Matrix Games voice on what it thinks on the matter and why though. To get fluffed off like what I got from Moon at BF will just mean I don't care a damn if it costs Matrix Games a bundle for my download.

I sit here wanting to help, I will continue on with my cd offer of course. I remind my brothers of the Dial up to refer to Steelers Charitable offer thread too.

And remember, those that wish to complain that the file is to large, well enjoy your complaining :) Because you don't have to suffer, unless you like too :)

Oh, I'm right there with you on this. Trust me.

I work as a Network Admin at a large university, and if they're willing to put out torrents I can offer up an awful lot of bandwidth to help out (50Mbps).

I can't run as an official mirror without torrents however, except maybe for one weekend if I take my boss out for beer and distract him.

Rhodan -> RE: Use Bit Torrent program to release large files guys (5/28/2004 7:59:02 PM)

It would also mean that the seeds and peers that have the full and partial download of the file, must keep their torrent client running all the time WITH the .torrent file on it..meaning you would not only have the full installed game on your HD, but the @450 Mb torrent as well...

unless I 've really misunderstood the torrent system

Les_the_Sarge_9_1 -> RE: Use Bit Torrent program to release large files guys (5/28/2004 8:07:08 PM)

You are correct Rhodan.

Getting the file means having the whole file on system while downloading portions of the file.

Seeding/sending the file would mean leaving access to the file open while it was being accessed by those getting the file.

That sounds imposing till you realise, that it would be likely that quite a large number of people would be constantly coming and going while this was happening, and the process would not always require a person always be online participating, merely that a lot of people were available as a whole.

It is considered good etiquette to leave your download open for a while as thanks for geting the file basically.

In fact, those that share, usually will boot people that show up, take, don't share equally and then leave on a frequent basis.

A person that enjoys massive bandwidth advantages (some of my friends have actually NO limits on their monthly bandwidth eh) could easily make themselves entirely useful just leaving the file open for a day or so.

Me, my service is 5 gigs upload 5 gigs download a month.
So I can give out 5 gigs worth of upload out simply because I already paid for it at any rate :)
But I usually spend all my limit on anime hehe.

STEELER -> RE: Use Bit Torrent program to release large files guys (5/29/2004 11:46:17 AM)

Yo Les,
What about security? Sorry it just reminds me that many viruses are/were created specifically for peer to peer file sharing networks like Kazaa. Isn't this more of the same?
Also I agree with the valid point that all the files have to be available at the same time---very difficult isn't it? I mean after the initial first two weeks.
Ok, that being said...I downloaded 3 different 400+MB files in the last two months and due to comcast(whom everyone but myself hates) and Download Accelerator, I never spent more than 15 minutes downloading. So of course my offer still stands.
BUT so people are clear...Les offers a "super CD" that includes all the different mods and extras that he has found, while I only include the official matrix version. Les has been generously offering his service for awhile now and my offer was generated from the comment someone made complaining about paying Les the cost of mailing the cd which is Les' only request--and a very reasonable one at that. I don't like to infringe on his offer, only provide an alternative channel for getting the cd. There is quite a demand for cd's so it does help to have a few channels open. I have been averaging 3 requests a week for the last two months---since 8.2 was announced..but once it is released I expect demand to go back up to 10-15 per week for at least two months as it was when 8.0 first released.

Thanks to all who have made donations!

Les_the_Sarge_9_1 -> RE: Use Bit Torrent program to release large files guys (5/29/2004 5:16:21 PM)

Kazaa = spyware = yuck

Kazaa = viruses = bad idea

Kazaa = files that are fake = grrrr

Bit Torrent = files you give to yourself even as you are trading same back and forth. Its a two way process, you can't just download a one way torrent file, doesn't work one way. Either you share, or the file doesn't transfer.

You ain't going to give yourself spyware correct, that would be dumb. Actually the files are all you get, because it isn't a program like Kazaa you browse for files. If you don't actually know WHERE the file is already, you ain't getting it. So if the torrent is located at Matrix Games downloads, then that is where you get it.

Viruses, see above, you ain't going to give it to yourself right? And I doubt Matrix Games is going to give it to me.

Wrong file? no, if it is called SPWaW.whatever extension I can't recall at this moment, then that IS what the file will be.

Secure, well you would be likely swapping the file with many other Steel Panthers fans, but it would only be Steel Panthers fans swapping eh.

And no one has ever complained about getting the file from me on cd, so I am assuming they will trust getting it from me as a torrent file too.
