daniel123 -> RE: Hmmm... (6/11/2004 2:45:58 AM)

i have been buying SSG products forever, all the way back to apple 2 days. i like the look of the new TAO4 also. this product will be on my buy list. the last program was korsun. the war games have been few and far between over the last years. now 3 programs are in my purchase list in the next 3-4 month period.

2gaulle -> RE: Hmmm... (6/11/2004 5:57:03 AM)

Are we talkinmg weeks? months? The beta aars at run 5 look so good... really really good
ok.[&o] Thanks again for a truly fine series, I played the first tao, and now shes all grown up..[:'(]

Toby42 -> RE: Hmmm... (6/12/2004 6:57:01 PM)

I've been following the AAR on Run 5. Very informative info and fun to read. I was wondering what kind of computers that they are using? KP runs fine on mine. I'm hoping that the same will be true for BIN.

Otto20000 -> RE: Hmmm... (6/13/2004 12:35:50 AM)

I can't wait for this game I just love Korsun Pocket. I hope BIN really has a better AI that would be my only minor complaint of Korsun.

daniel123 -> RE: Hmmm... (6/13/2004 12:50:07 AM)

read the aar's at run 5 there will be a lot of changes. also TOA4 has been changed for the BIN format. there is a aar for TOA also.

Rob Gjessing -> RE: Hmmm... (6/13/2004 4:19:15 PM)

Im running a P4 2.4ghtz, but that said, I dont think the specs are much different to those needed for KP.. so if KP runs ok on your machine then BIN will also.. I think the battlesinnormandy.com website has some info about machine specs..

Here you go:

System Requirements:
Windows 98 / Me / 2000 / XP
Pentium II 450 MHz CPU
128 MB RAM
DirectX 8.1
8 MB Video Card 16bit color
Sound Card (DirectX 8 comp.)
8x CD-ROM
500 MB free Hard Disk space

Here's one, why did you choose a 1 turn/day time scale for BiN rather than the 2 turns/day scale used in TAO? What advantages does it offer?

Rob Gjessing -> RE: Hmmm... (6/15/2004 10:45:48 AM)

Ermm.. the game would have been too long?

Kent,

If you look at the scale of BiN it makes a lot of sense to have day long turns. This really works well as simulating the ability of one side to react to the other. If you do two turns a day then players (especially the German side) can micromanage the units and send large formations rushing about the battle. At one day per turn you have to anticipate your opponent's moves and keep a reserve (if possible).

Capitaine,

One of the great aspects in BiN is the user friendly editor; it will allow you to create alternate scenarios exactly as you like. If you think 12 hours per turn and twice as many turns is better then you could easily create an alternate campaign scenario to do just that.

Capitaine -> RE: Hmmm... (6/15/2004 5:07:17 PM)

Well, I've dabbled with the editor for KP a bit and that doesn't necessarily make a conversion "easy". Perhaps BiN's editor will be more "user friendly"?

Anyway, with the "one action per turn" rubric in place, this affects many more things than just combat (the rate of which is also doubled). You have to consider the number of bridge demolitions and repairs, air sorties, barrages, and a host of other 1-action-per-turn "details" when making such a dramatic shift (1/2-day to 1 day = 100% time increase).

Perhaps SSG can enlighten us on which scale they now believe more faithfully reflects historical capability concerning the aforementioned (and other implicated) procedures?

In a word, some genuine, honest, designers' notes on what is deemed to be a "better scale" for the engine. [:)]

Captaine,

The new editor is awesome. In addition to being user friendly I expect it will come with a very good user's guide.

Once you see BiN in action many of your once per turn questions will answer themselves. Believe I read in one of the AARs that engineers can have their chances of blowing bridge success adjusted to being as effective as the designer wants. Number of bridges repaired would be something that having two turns per day would affect greatly... the 1 day per turn fits this better IMHO. Interdiction, movement rates, etc... should be scaled so that it would make little difference in terms of 1 or 2 turns per 24 hour period.

JSS

Capitaine -> RE: Hmmm... (6/15/2004 7:15:37 PM)

Thanks JSS. If some of those "one action" issues are resolved perhaps the new engine will make the differing scales more palatable for some of us! [8D]

Anyway, I will buy BiN when available. The AAR between Roger and Rob is very interesting and the basic DB game concept very attractive. [:)]

freeboy -> RE: Hmmm... (6/16/2004 3:24:45 AM)

does anyone care to give us a guess at gold dates.. ssg's sight still states second quarter.. that is June right? ok.. just wondering.. thanks for what I believe will be your best yet..

For whom? The full campaign in Normandy 44 was 400+ turns. Compared to that, the 80 or so that would have been required for BiN hardly seems unreasonable. Besides, isn't the campaign broken into two parts, one scenario for the landings and one for the breakout?

That sounds perfectly reasonable, but then why is TAO being maintained at 2 turns/day? Pretty much the same scale, right?

My guess would be after Origins since WitP has been announced for Origins and BiN has not.

freeboy -> RE: Hmmm... (6/17/2004 7:32:57 PM)

Elmo,
Probably a work backlog at matrix, getting new games up and out the door is time consuming, as is getting all the coordination for origins.. soo hopefully we will see dd after origins.. those aars look great! I am really looking forward to the new editor.. are you on r5 ladder?

Yup, as Elmo.

ravinhood -> RE: Hmmm... (6/18/2004 12:27:03 AM)

This is my first highly anticipated wargame from Matrix. I'm a European WWII war buff, so I've waited patiently past Korsun Pocket and HTTR for this game. So can you please hurry it up? ;) And I hope you are going to Africa next, that is my 2nd favorite area of WWII. Sorry, I'm not a russian front fan and wouldn't enjoy playing either the russians or the germans. I must crush the Axis with the superpowerful Americans and Patton. ;)
