This may be outside the normal scope of this forum, but how do I play Steel Panthers II on Windows 2000 Pro?

You install it [:D] Just kidding. What problems are you experiencing? Is it crashing. Post some additional infor and I'll see if I can help.

Every time I see a reference to Win 2000 I just have to grimace.

First question are you absolutely forced to use that OS?

Second question, when you say SP II, are you aware of the version called SPMBT?

It is a free download from SP Cammo

http://linetap.com/www/drg/SPCamo.htm

It might give you less trouble than the actual original version.

At any rate, I have been able to run both SP II and SPMBT (the rebuilt SP II) on a machine using Win XP, (which I am told has a lot in common), but it still experiences mouse speed troubles which you might have to fix directly.

This page at SP Cammo might be of help if you have not already found it.

Major_Johnson -> RE: SP II (6/12/2004 7:16:16 PM)

Isn't that download from SPCamo just a patch that goes on top of the install of the game??? That's the impression I got. It's really not that big a file, less than 58 MB's.

Les_the_Sarge_9_1 -> RE: SP II (6/13/2004 3:20:30 PM)

SP Cammo supports versions that are a lot less "large file intensive" actually.

SPWW2 is what they wanted the game to look like way back when SPWaW was being invented.

Differing viewpoints led them in a different direction is all.

But both SPWW2 (which is actually retooled original Steel Panthers) and SPMBT (which is actually Steel Panthers 2 Modern Battles) are both in fact full games.

They have in the past released patches for their own version though.

They are expected to be releasing brand new updated versions of both games in the not distant future (it ain't just SPWaW that goes through evolutions eh).

A large portion of SPWaW is just the sound library actually. My SND folder (sounds) is currently a whopping big 832 megs all by itself.

Wild Bill -> RE: SP II (6/14/2004 12:56:42 AM)

I can still play SP2 and SP3 on my comnputer. SP1, the original, however, has been replaced by SPWAW and SPWW2.

Just finished watching again "We Were Soldiers..." Magnificent movie, stunning tribute to the Air-Cav and the famous 7th Cavalry!

Now I'm going to pull out my SP2 and SP3 discs and replay my Ia Drang scenarios, including my "1st Team" campaign in SP3 for the participation of the Air-Cav during the Vietnam War. It is part of a trilogy of campaigns, the other two being on armor in Vietnam and the Riverine forces.

Let's get those choppers in the air!

Thanks for the link Sarge [:)] I just downloaded SPMBT and it rocks!

Are there any forums for SPMBT? I have a bunch of newbie questions about gear and such.

Lars Remmen -> RE: SP II (6/15/2004 5:59:16 PM)

There is an e-mail list on Yahoo groups.

Regards,

Lars

Alby -> RE: SP II (6/15/2004 6:17:17 PM)

yes they have discussion group
on Yahoo.

Flyboy -> RE: SP II (6/15/2004 6:27:56 PM)

Thanks Sarge. I'll try downloading SPMBT, which I take it is designed for windows OS and not DOS?

I think that was my problem, trying to run a DOS-based program on Windows 2000 (which I am forced to use since I frequently use my personal laptop for work, and that's what work installed on it . . .)

I used to play SP II a few years ago, and have been hankerin' for more modern battles than SPWAW . . .

I'll give it a try.

Les_the_Sarge_9_1 -> RE: SP II (6/15/2004 6:39:05 PM)

SP Cammo's versions are every bit as dos as is SPWaW is. But SPWaW is a tad more adjusted to like Windows.

Still if you are playing Steel Panthers, you are playing a dos designed game (keep that in mind).

SPMBT works in Windows XP, although with every piece of software out there it seems, you might get to be part of the miniscule percentage that meets the brick wall of difficulty.

It happens.

Warfare HQ has a good Steel Panthers community, as well as of course SPWaW Depot.

And I am sure there are others. I don't care for Wargamer any more, but if all you want are files, check in there as well.

Alby -> RE: SP II (6/15/2004 7:25:15 PM)

whole list of things to do to get spww2 and spmbt to work in windows XP

http://linetap.com/www/drg/SPCamo-SPinXP.htm

I didnt have any luck
my monitor really screwed up when I tried to run those games.

Jim1954 -> RE: SP II (6/15/2004 7:32:32 PM)

Biggest problem I found was that those DOS programs really don't like the lower end GForce video cards.

From SP Camo website

How do I play on Windows 2000?

Windows 2000 is not a supported platform, sorry. All other flavours of Windows, DOS and OS/2 can play Steel Panthers.

We are now supporting SPMBT over at Warfare HQ. We also support SPWAW/SPWAWH2H.
