52nd Lowland -> Base Sizes.. (6/24/2004 1:45:24 PM)

Is there anywhere to get a list of the sizes that allied bases can go up ie Airfield and Port size ?

tanjman -> RE: Base Sizes.. (6/24/2004 2:02:24 PM)

There are at Spooky's UV website at: http://uncommon-valor.chez.tiscali.fr/ look under Files/Scenarios

You can build a base up to +3 over it's printed max. So an base that has a Port-AF rating of 1-3, can actually be built up to 4-7.

The only cavet is bases with a zero rating. You -can- build it up to +3, but it takes a lot more time and supplies to make it so. So those bases in New Caledonia (near Noumea) that are Port(0)-AF(6), can be built up to Port(3)-AF(9), but building the port up is goig to take a lot of time and supplies (because it started at a zero).

And just FYI -

Larger port sizes load/unload faster. And you can disband in a level 3 port or higher (so it protects vs. subs).

AC capacity of an AF is 50x the AF size. So a Level 3 AF, can launch 150 AC without penalty (assuming adaquate baseforces).

To avoid higher Operational Losses :
For 1e aircraft, you should have a Level 2 AF.
For 2e aircraft, you should have a Level 4 AF.
For 4e aircraft, you should have a Level 6 AF.

Thanx for the info..im just advancing as Allies up the Solomons from Guadalcanal and was lloking for the best base so that my short range Fighters and strike aircraft can help with the reduction of the base at the Shortland Islands.

Munda or Vila are fine for that but may be defended by the IJN. Lambeti and Russel Islands are also valuable bases for a careful advance.

52nd Lowland -> RE: Base Sizes.. (6/24/2004 6:35:11 PM)

The only threat i face now are isolated sorties by IJN heavies after sinking 6 CVs and 1 CVL as well as the default Rabual long range bombing attacks.Just need a base that allows the Wildcats to escort the SBDs and TBF Marine Air from whatever island into Shortland.
Any info on the best strategy to reduce and invade as Shortland seems to be well protected by Coastal Defence etc ?

AmiralLaurent -> RE: Base Sizes.. (6/24/2004 9:14:15 PM)

My best advice will be to never invade it. Surround it with bases at Munda, Vila and Bougainville and pound the crap of the base with your bombers. Kavieng is a far more valuable target.

If you really want it, send everything you have on the invasion... Sweep the base before the invasion with MSW TF only, so the CD guns will not fire, and then send at least 3 divisions. The AI has probably 2 divisions here and will launch a shock attack to crush the invasion so you should land as most assault troops as possible in the 2 first days.

Yep if i remember rightly the last time i tried to invade thats exactly what happened.The IJ Army launched a shock attack before i could get the assault troops on the beach in sufficient numbers to oppose the attack.Better to contain the base through air strikes and go round it to work my way up the island chain.

I second this tactic, but any base will fall readily enough (even to a weaker force) if it is out of supply. Reduce the enemy air force and then turn to port bombing attacks with your heavies. Port attacks do a good job of eating up supplies. Lather, repeat and rinse as necessary until you are sure they are starving. Generally, you can tell a port is running out of supply if the AA fire is no longer shooting down many of your bombers.

scorryuk -> RE: Base Sizes.. (6/26/2004 2:30:20 AM)

Yeah supply is the key. IJN had managed to build up a force 20,000 troops strong on Lunga during my current game. Had only managed 15,000 myself and had to land them on beach on adj hex and then march them. But had been doing a good job of sinking any supplt TFs. Had mined all approaches over several turns. (4 DMs sent in during cover of darkness). Also made good use of subs and night time naval bombardments. Base fell with over 10,000 IJN troops still defending. Assume they were taken prisoner.

I`d be interested in the tactics you used to sink the 6 Japanese CV`s + 1 CVL in one battle. Was this with LBA ? or a CV vs CV battle ?

Thanks

Tactics ? What makes you think anything tactical was involved ? Only kidding...Actually the IJN CVs were sunk in three seperate battles,four CVs in 1,1CV + CVL in another and the last was just by itself attacking Lunga.
For the major engagement I had 5 CVs in a TF vs their 4 CVs with CPT Sherman in command and the TF set to react.I think that the IJN TF was actually under cloud cover and couldnt launch as there was no Jap counterattack from my devastating strike.I was then able to work over the TF as it tried to retreat and finish it off.I think it was one of those 1 in a million strikes as I would have expected to have lost at least part of my TF to their attack.
After this i was able to pick off the remaining IJN CVs at will whenever they appeared.
