Is cheating possible in WiTP? I know many wargames have had this problem in the past. Re-doing turns, database manipulation, ect. What kind of safe guards are built into the product to prevent cheating?

cheating is always possible.....no way to completely prevent it. You mainly have to find an opponent you can trust. Example....all the testers have been required to use the same standard Allied/Japan passwords for all PBEM test games...that way, if a save has to be sent....dont have to bother trying to get that info. Never felt the need to er..."Peek" at my opponent's setup. Same with house rules and such....

As for OOB manipulations.....it may be possible for the Turn 1 starter (he who selects the scenerio, then ends his turn 1 and sends to partner) to use unauth OOB data....but at least in test games, this tended to cause problems in the code.

Any scenerios that are modified will display "official" or unofficia before being selected.

IIRC in UV the random #s that would determine the results of combat were generated prior to sending the save game, so repeating the turn would just give the same results. Is that the case too in WITP?

reloading the save/combat replay will produce the same results

And the OOB is hidden until turn 2 so you can't restart a bunch of games till you get one where all your stuff comes early.

Someone would have to go to an extreme amount of effort to "cheat". Personally, I'd rather spend the time planning...

It seems likely that cheating won't be a problem. Since results are calculated by one player and seen by the other, I don't see how this could be manipulated to one's advantage.

I remember one bug in UV...I don't remember specifics since its been a while, but you made a certain combination of moves, and presto, you were the opposite side. That was about as close to cheating as I ever came. I think Feinder and I sent that set of turns to Matrix for eval.

There was also an issue of taking the turn to another computer. I would run the turns on my laptop or desktop depending on when I was playing. Feinder and I soon figured out that the combat results differed from computer to computer. Sent that one to Matrix also. They fixed the multi computer bug for sure.

Echoing the other posts though...why cheat? You aren't in a levelling game; you can edit the scenarios of you want to feel all powerful and play as Japan against the US equipped only with fishing boats if you really feel the need to play God.

Cheating? would take an amazing amount of tmie and effort. Forget it.

As for the tester's universal passwords - some of us missed that message (I always use the same password anyway nowadays - for those of you with angry wives and girlfriends, using their name as the password (and letting them know it) and having to type it in thousands upon thousands of times into the PC tends to make them more tolerant).

Of course if you do get divorced you probably don't want to have to type your ex's name in 5 times a day ;)

As long as some players put WINNING above all other reasons there will be some
looking for a reason to try to cheat. The best defense is to simply avoid playing
with opponants who seem to "wrapped up" in the need to win. Nobody likes to
lose, but most gamers accept the fact that for every winner, there will be a loser;
and the important part is the enjoyment of the play itself. In this game, the Japan-
ese side is going to be a tough challenge in many scenarios, and the Allies are go-
ing to have a rough row to hoe in the opening scenarios. They may be able to get
a "win" through VP's, but the real "game" will be to try to out-think and out plan
their opponant and achieve whatever "victory conditions they've set for themselves.
Cheating is just another price you have to pay when you put "VP's" in a game...

The password cheating isn't a real problem. As You mentioned it's too time-consuming. There is however one worse method... A memory cheat (using such programs like ArtMoney,GameWizard). You can simply manage almost every aspect of the game like resources, oil and fuel in base, but also sys,flt,fires damage and ships endurance. Against people using such tricks you can't oppose[:(], because it is hard to determine when he uses cheats...
