Og -> Should I scrap the Yamato on turn one? (6/30/2004 7:00:34 PM)

The thing eats gas and is worth lots of victory points to the allies once they catch if from the air and sink it. I would rather have the gas for subs and DEs. Do I get the metal off the thing if I scrap it, how long does it take?

What other big clunkers should I scap?

yours
Og

kaleun -> RE: Should I scrap the Yamato on turn one? (6/30/2004 7:04:12 PM)

Can you scrap ships?

Hammer2001 -> RE: Should I scrap the Yamato on turn one? (6/30/2004 7:05:52 PM)

Umm...Yamato is a matter of prestige and proud, and if you manage to engage it in a naval batlle it would be great even if the DDs were more usefull.

Fallschirmjager -> RE: Should I scrap the Yamato on turn one? (6/30/2004 7:08:41 PM)

Yamato wasnt usefull because it the IJN was too afraid to use it. In the game more agressive players who keep it away from air units should be able to use it to some great succes.
My philosophy has always been, if it destroys more VP than its worth, then it has done its job.

kaleun -> RE: Should I scrap the Yamato on turn one? (6/30/2004 7:09:21 PM)

Also the way the IJN navy used their BBs limited their usefulness.
They could have been used to protect CVs, support anphibious landings (Yes I know, early on, there was no need, later on no possibility)
I wouldn't scrap it, for a prestige and historical reason. There is NO way Japan would have scrapped Yamato.
If my Japanese oponent wants to do that, that's OK with me though.[8|]

freeboy -> RE: Should I scrap the Yamato on turn one? (6/30/2004 7:10:16 PM)

wow scrapping ships... Thise could have some impact if you could use all that steel for something usefull

Mr.Frag -> RE: Should I scrap the Yamato on turn one? (6/30/2004 7:10:35 PM)

Why on earth would you scrap it? It makes great holes in ships!

Quit worrying about them rebel USN types ... they live in fear of you! [:D]

kaleun -> RE: Should I scrap the Yamato on turn one? (6/30/2004 7:12:07 PM)

The threat is greater than the execution.
Tchigorin ( IIRC)

Grell -> RE: Should I scrap the Yamato on turn one? (6/30/2004 7:12:16 PM)

Hey Og,

I wouldn't scrap it even if it is a torpedo magnet. It's like what Hammer said a presitigiuos element of the IJN. Would the Germans have scrapped Bismark or Tirpitz? Never in a million years, too much national pride in those babies.

kaleun -> RE: Should I scrap the Yamato on turn one? (6/30/2004 7:13:50 PM)

Exactly. The Tirpitz, sitting in a fjord in Norway effectively inmobilized a significant number of British capital ships that had to guard against it breaking out.
Use the Yamato wisely, and it will pose a headache for the allies.[X(]

Ron Saueracker -> RE: Should I scrap the Yamato on turn one? (6/30/2004 7:26:27 PM)

Nice big target![8D]

rawink -> RE: Should I scrap the Yamato on turn one? (6/30/2004 7:26:59 PM)

Judging by the fact that I can't KILL Yamato or Musashi head to head with USN BB's and CA's in a stand up fight.. I would keep it!!!

The ONLY way I have ever SANK either of these ships was with air.. and lots of it. I can beat them to a bloody pulp with 14 and 16" guns.. but they always manage to get home while I end up with 4 or 5 BB's damaged beyond short term repair for my effort.

at least this was true in UV, and I doubt it has changed much

Xargun -> RE: Should I scrap the Yamato on turn one? (6/30/2004 7:29:48 PM)

I already have plans for Yamato and its nice 18" guns... Something I'm sure the Allies will not like [:D] As for her sister ship thats a different story.. not sure when its supposed to be built, but it might get halted - it eats a lot of Ship points.

kaleun -> RE: Should I scrap the Yamato on turn one? (6/30/2004 7:33:13 PM)

I guess we can't convert the Mushashi to a CV can we?[&:]

rawink -> RE: Should I scrap the Yamato on turn one? (6/30/2004 7:34:04 PM)

well, there was the Shinano...

freeboy -> RE: Should I scrap the Yamato on turn one? (6/30/2004 7:34:20 PM)

a super cv.. with jets.. still want to play the allies?

kaleun -> RE: Should I scrap the Yamato on turn one? (6/30/2004 7:35:38 PM)

I know we get the Shinano, but can we convert the Musashi into Shinano's younger sister?[;)]

Nikademus -> RE: Should I scrap the Yamato on turn one? (6/30/2004 7:36:25 PM)

i like making holes in things..... huh huh huh huh huh huh huh [;)]

brisd -> RE: Should I scrap the Yamato on turn one? (6/30/2004 7:41:25 PM)

I would think that those two super BB's are the only ones that can stand up to the modern US BB's so you need them. The Shinano was such as waste of metal, they could at least made it into a Midway-style supercarrier instead of a giant a/c transport?! Between her and the BB conversions, there was some serious screwups in the IJN high command about the realities of carrier warfare IMHO. Would make an interesting scenario to create, optional Japanese carrier construction.

UncleBuck -> RE: Should I scrap the Yamato on turn one? (6/30/2004 7:46:22 PM)

I would not scrap her. Can you imagine her as a Rear area Commerce raider? Or use her for long range rear area bombardments. You already know that to sink her it is going to take a lucky shot or the dedication of an awful lot of assets. The Lucky shot, well you pay your money you takes your chances, but if she breaks into the backfield and starts hammering transports, or mid-range basses, you could get lots of help. If the enemy leaves it alone, you get to run around hammering convoys, and such. If he decides to chase her away or really sink her, you have somewhere that is going to be thin. Use her strategically and not think tactically.

Didz -> RE: Should I scrap the Yamato on turn one? (6/30/2004 7:51:21 PM)

I think the question was can you scrap her, not should you scrap her.

Deciding to cut down on the size of ones battleship fleet and route the resourses in another direction is perfectly valid but does the game allow it?

hithere -> RE: Should I scrap the Yamato on turn one? (6/30/2004 7:51:42 PM)

But does Japan have enough gas to do that? I would imagine you would need some kinda escort too. also..that would not only put them along way from any base, but would provide a excellent training opportunity for any surviving U.S. carriers.

Ron Saueracker -> RE: Should I scrap the Yamato on turn one? (6/30/2004 7:56:47 PM)

Yamato or 500+ ASW escorts? I'd rather have the escorts and leave the Japanese fixation for sword size to weirdo zaibatsu execs who like to knaw on Walrus knob, Bluefin Tuna horn and dirty school girl panties.[:)] Essentially, Yamato class were basically just a "mine is bigger" venture.

Might catch some flak for that one...[:D]

grraven2004 -> RE: Should I scrap the Yamato on turn one? (6/30/2004 7:57:19 PM)

I wouldn't scrap her either.

I did lose the Musashi to the North Carolina and South Dakota off Irau in one pbem.
However by the time they finally caught her she had caused so much destruction she had paid for herself three times over.

UncleBuck -> RE: Should I scrap the Yamato on turn one? (6/30/2004 7:58:30 PM)

I don't know if they have enough gas to support that. But earlier in the war say 41 to mid 42, you should be able to run around form forward bases. As for escort, I think you could go light. You are looking for Transports, and if PH goes well the US won't have many heavy forces to send after you. Think of this. 4 DD's, 2 CL's, 1 CA, and the Yamato. Small Group, to try and find, but powerful against your targeted ship type. Fuel could be positioned with a replenishment group following them out to a departure point. You know a hole in the ocean where they fill up before going out to kill. I would think that a couple AO's in the middle of no where or even setting up a small base somewhere just a fuel depot would not be that tough.

If the question is to reduce supply and move the points somewhere else, well, I guess it depends on your strategy.

The title of the thread is Should I scrap the Yamato....

Not sure myself why you would want to scrap it. On what ship will the americans sign the terms of surrender in San Fran Bay?

kaleun -> RE: Should I scrap the Yamato on turn one? (6/30/2004 8:03:59 PM)

At the risk of giving my future PBEM opponent ideas, that would be like the use of the pocket battleship as a commerce raider a la Graf Spee.
Maybe Yamato is not that fast, but with a couple of Destroyers could be quite dangerous

ltfightr -> RE: Should I scrap the Yamato on turn one? (6/30/2004 8:10:33 PM)

I would not scrap her either. Think of her if the japanese had used her and her sisters in the Guadalcanal area the havoc she would have left.[X(]
The Japanese Navy did not use the battleship as aggressively as they needed to when they needed to.[:-]

tsimmonds -> RE: Should I scrap the Yamato on turn one? (6/30/2004 8:11:37 PM)

A Yamato in the hand is worth anything you might trade her in for, if it takes two years to get it.

Musashi is essentially complete. I believe she arrives in July 1942. There is no provision for converting her into a CV, as construction was much too far along.

jnier -> RE: Should I scrap the Yamato on turn one? (6/30/2004 8:13:59 PM)

Is it possible to prevent the conversion of the Shinano to a CV? Can she be built as a BB?

And what about the hybrids BB/CV's? Can you keep them as BB's?
