Ingrid Bergman.... But, I digress - Favorite Films: The Enemy Below Cruel Sea Das Boot Sands of Iwo Jima (The old man was a DI) Battle Cry (by Uris, he was there) Task Force (1949 - Walter Brennan as an Admiral) Mr. Roberts The Longest Day Saving Private Ryan Just a few. I keep being drawn to "In Harm's Way" but the plot is predictable and the special effects attrocious. Only thing that saves it is the acting. It had some big names in it. It also had Patricia Neal - I don't know who had the better voice, her or Lauren Bacall.

Stuff I like (which most of you probably wont lol) are: The Thin Red Line- I found it a very atmospheric, intelligent film; the voice overs just added to its appeal, with the characters questioning the puropse of god/humanity. I think its one of the better war films to be released recently. Band of Brothers - Not technically a film, but a really good mini-series; I had to read Ambroses' book afterwards. La Grande Illusion - French film by Jean Renoir. Its about French WW1 fighter pilots who get shot down over german lines and end up in a POW camp. Its about solidarity in the face of hardship, and was hated so much by the Nazis that they tried to destroy it (it was made late 30's). Apocalypse Now - This has to be one of the 20thC classic films of all time. A masterpeice. Saving Private Ryan - Great entertainment; at least modern high budget war films today pay attention to historical detail, instead of using modern era weapons disguised as WW2 vintage.

Tough one as there are a tremendous amount of good ones to choose from. Here's my top few: Saving Private Ryan/Band of Brothers - I put them together in my mind for some reason. We Were Soldiers - Don't think anyone mentioned this one but I liked it a lot. Gettysburg Braveheart - I think there's a good argument that this is war movie even though it's more aptly described as an epic. Honorable Mentions: Patton Tora Tora Tora/Midway - I link these two the same way I do Pvt. Ryan and Band of Brothers Battle of the Bulge - I know, I know, it's historical trash but for some reason it entertains me.

In Harm's Way (though the book Harm's Way is MUCH better and torrey's sun jere is not a stuck up ass.) But this is not the reason, the reason is: All films don�t show heroism, they show reality of war. And in my opinion, in a war is no heroism. The Band of Brothers episode where they are getting creamed by a couple of 88's is pretty good. First time I ever saw a movie that even came near giving you the feel of being under Arty fire. Need to play it with the Base cranked so the shell bursts actually hurt.

Though it may not be on anybody's favorites list "When trumpets fade" is a nice little movie.Ron Eldards character is interesting to say the least,and in the end you have to wonder did he do it because it was the right thing...or was he still being selfish.

I am a Patton fan... BoB was very impressive. Can`t wait for the Pacific War version... Glory.. While technically not a war film as you can see I am a definite fan of Dr. Strangelove...On the other hand (I did see one post mention it) for me, the worst war movie of time (even though totally fictional) was Starship Troopers... I am in Japan (and last night they had Das Boot on in Japanese only) the public TV always runs a 1 year drama on a historical figure or period (about 50 45 minute episodes). A few of them in the last decade or so have been quite good...In particular Hideyoshi and Mohri Motonari were rather good.
