The Movie Musical, South Pacific??? I liked it...

Aloid -> RE: Fav War Films (7/1/2004 9:35:33 AM)

I have to throw in "The Winter War". Not a Hollywood romp, but a good depiction of warfare in the ETO.

Aloid

The best ETO movie ever was a mini series - Band of Brothers!

Private Ryan, Patton, All Quiet on the Western Front, Midway, Gods and Generals.... Sands of Iwo Jima

Mitzi Gaynor sure was a rocket in her day. Thankfully we have these old movies to remind us what women looked like before the lip jobs, implants, senseless tatoos, endless piercings and the other needless crap women think is "becoming" these days.

I always thought Doris Day was a babe. I'm half her age but she sure looks good in her early movies. Awesome sexy voice too.[&o]

Mike Wood -> RE: Fav War Films (7/1/2004 2:36:57 PM)

Hello...

I liked Mitz. I really liked Veronica Lake. I wanted to marry Dina Shore, hottest babe since Helen (of Troy).

RevRick -> RE:Women - two words... (7/1/2004 2:51:51 PM)

Ingrid Bergman....

But, I digress -

Favorite Films:
The Enemy Below
Cruel Sea
Das Boot
Sands of Iwo Jima (The old man was a DI)
Battle Cry (by Uris, he was there)
Task Force (1949 - Walter Brennan as an Admiral)
Mr. Roberts
The Longest Day
Saving Private Ryan

Just a few. I keep being drawn to "In Harm's Way" but the plot is predictable and the special effects attrocious. Only thing that saves it is the acting. It had some big names in it. It also had Patricia Neal - I don't know who had the better voice, her or Lauren Bacall.

jhdeerslayer -> RE: Fav War Films (7/1/2004 2:54:05 PM)

Band of Brothers - Argueably the most accurate war film ever.

PeteG662 -> RE: RE:Women - two words... (7/1/2004 3:06:07 PM)

Thanks RevRick for mentioning The Enemy Below.....excellent movie

kev_uk -> RE: RE:Women - two words... (7/1/2004 3:51:04 PM)

Stuff I like (which most of you probably wont lol) are:
The Thin Red Line- I found it a very atmospheric, intelligent film; the voice overs just added to its appeal, with the characters questioning the puropse of god/humanity. I think its one of the better war films to be released recently.

Band of Brothers - Not technically a film, but a really good mini-series; I had to read Ambroses' book afterwards.

La Grande Illusion - French film by Jean Renoir. Its about French WW1 fighter pilots who get shot down over german lines and end up in a POW camp. Its about solidarity in the face of hardship, and was hated so much by the Nazis that they tried to destroy it (it was made late 30's).

Apocalypse Now - This has to be one of the 20thC classic films of all time. A masterpeice.

Saving Private Ryan - Great entertainment; at least modern high budget war films today pay attention to historical detail, instead of using modern era weapons disguised as WW2 vintage.

That movie about Carlsons raiders and Makin Island(?)

That's Gung Ho, if I remember correctly.

nico71 -> RE: Fav War Films (7/1/2004 4:15:28 PM)

For those who like Das Boot: do you know that the full length version (282 mins) is available on DVD in the US now?

vonmoltke -> RE: Fav War Films (7/1/2004 4:20:54 PM)

Guess I'll chime in now...

Das Boot
The Enemy Below
Run Silent, Run Deep
Glory
Patton
Zulu
The Blue Max

CaptainBlood -> RE: Fav War Films (7/1/2004 4:24:59 PM)

The Enemy Below
Waterloo
The Longest Day

And throwing tangential bone to the sci-fi guys

The Final Countdown - Gotta love F-14s taking out Zeros with Sidewinders and Vulcan Cannon

Apollo11 -> RE: Fav War Films (7/1/2004 4:52:09 PM)

Hi all,

Let us not forget one of the greatest aviation war films of the 1970's Or perhaps all times):

Aces High

http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0075627/

This film is very very very hard to watch because it shows the grim realities of WWI very very very accurately...

Leo "Apollo11"

The Gnome -> RE: Fav War Films (7/1/2004 4:55:50 PM)

Tough one as there are a tremendous amount of good ones to choose from. Here's my top few:

Saving Private Ryan/Band of Brothers - I put them together in my mind for some reason.
We Were Soldiers - Don't think anyone mentioned this one but I liked it a lot.
Gettysburg
Braveheart - I think there's a good argument that this is war movie even though it's more aptly described as an epic.

Honorable Mentions:
Patton
Tora Tora Tora/Midway - I link these two the same way I do Pvt. Ryan and Band of Brothers
Battle of the Bulge - I know, I know, it's historical trash but for some reason it entertains me.

byron13 -> RE: Fav War Films (7/1/2004 8:51:11 PM)

The REAL List:

Saving Private Ryan
Blackhawk Down
A Bridge Too Far
In Harm's Way
Battleground
Zulu
Battle of Britain
Das Boot ("short" version)
Twelve O'Clock High
Devil's Brigade
Horatio Hornblower

Just to save space:
Battle of the Bulge and Midway are amongst the worst

joey -> RE: Fav War Films (7/1/2004 9:01:11 PM)

Saving Private Ryan
Das Boot
Apoclapse Now

waynec -> RE: Fav War Films (7/1/2004 9:05:07 PM)

In Harm's Way (though the book Harm's Way is MUCH better and torrey's sun jere is not a stuck up ass.)
The Enemy Below ( again the book is better but hard to find)
The Guns of Navarone (as good as the book)
12 o'clock High (as gopod as the book)
We Were Soldiers (as good as the book)
Zulu
The Lighthorsemen (Australian mounted infantry ar Beersheba in WW1)
Tor, Tora, Tora (i am a huge Pearl Harbor nut and was born on December 7th ('51))r
between Tora, Tora, Tora and In Harm's Way i like the way they did the Pearl Harbor attack without thinking theyy had to show everything.

Kelly's Heros (but i am a former tanker)
Destination Gobi

Paulchen -> RE: Fav War Films (7/1/2004 9:08:00 PM)

Das Boot
Stalingrad (Regie: Filzmaier)
Die Brücke (from the 50´s, about german children-soldiers)
20. Juli (assasine on Adolf Nazi, about Graf Schenk von Stauffenberg)

Yes, this are all german-films. But this is not the reason, the reason is: All films don´t show heroism, they show reality of war. And in my opinion, in a war is no heroism.

The bridge from Arnheim
Saving Private Ryan (only the first hour)

GameTester -> RE: Fav War Films (7/1/2004 9:09:57 PM)

Too many good ones to name.

mongo -> RE: Fav War Films (7/1/2004 9:10:50 PM)

I've always been partial to:

A Walk in the Sun (great book too)
Go for Broke! (Can't verify any of the accuracy however)

Mr.Frag -> RE: Fav War Films (7/1/2004 9:13:01 PM)

The Band of Brothers episode where they are getting creamed by a couple of 88's is pretty good. First time I ever saw a movie that even came near giving you the feel of being under Arty fire. Need to play it with the Base cranked so the shell bursts actually hurt.

Capt Cliff -> RE: Fav War Films (7/1/2004 9:22:50 PM)

Red Badge of Courage - with Audie Murphy
Action in the North Atlantic
Battleground
Wing and a Prayer
Wake Island
They were Expendable!
Thirty Seconds over Tokyo!
Proudly they Served? (with Noel Coward at Lord Louie Mountbatten)
OSS (with Jame Cagney)
The Immortal Sergant (with Henry Fonda)
Sahara!

Maliki -> RE: Fav War Films (7/2/2004 8:10:58 AM)

Though it may not be on anybody's favorites list "When trumpets fade" is a nice little movie.Ron Eldards character is interesting to say the least, and in the end you have to wonder did he do it because it was the right thing...or was he still being selfish.

Arnir -> RE: Fav War Films (7/2/2004 8:24:41 AM)

Off the top of my head:
To Hell and Back
A Bridge Too Far
Saving Private Ryan/BoB
Battleground (I think that's the one. Battle of the Bulge?)
Firebase Gloria

jeffs -> RE: Fav War Films (7/2/2004 10:25:29 AM)

I am a Patton fan...
BoB was very impressive. Can`t wait for the Pacific War version...
Glory..

While technically not a war film as you can see I am a definite fan
of Dr. Strangelove...On the other hand (I did see one post mention it)
for me, the worst war movie of time (even though totally fictional)
was Starship Troopers...

I am in Japan (and last night they had Das Boot on in Japanese only)
the public TV always runs a 1 year drama on a historical figure or period
(about 50 45 minute episodes). A few of them in the last decade or so have been quite good...In particular Hideyoshi and Mohri Motonari were rather good.
