infinitejest -> Ground unit mouseover legend? (7/5/2004 12:18:07 AM)

I can't quite figure out what the values are for ground units when you move your mouse over the ground unit icon (and it doesn't appear to be in the manual). For example, in the tutorial I put my mouse over the ground units in Saipan, one of the units displayed is:

1782 132nd IJN Base Force - ENG A36 G3 F9 E9 V29 S96

So, 1782 is the id in the editor, 132 IJN Base Force is the unit's name, it's an ENGineer with an Assault value of 36. I'm guessing G is guns, F is Flak/AA, E is Engineering squads, V is aircraft support, S is Support. Is this right? And if it is right, I'm seeing some discrepancies between what the mouseover displays versus what the unit detail display shows.

Can anyone enlighten me about why this might be?

Or any feedback on whether I'm guessing the meaning of the values correctly would be much appreciated.

A = assault strength
G = CD guns only
F = all other guns
E = Engineers
V = Aviation Support
S = Support

Looks like you're reading it correctly, infinitejest. As for discrepancies between the mouseover and the unit detail, are you looking at the unit's TOE values, or its current values? The TOE value shows the unit in its ideal state, if it has all the equipment and personnel specified on its Table of Organization and Equipment. In real life, units frequently have much less than they're supposed to. If you see a red "show unit values" text at the bottom of the window with the unit's info, you're currently looking at the TOE values.

When looking at the unit's current values, the displays agree for me.

E & V are looking at the total ... on the list [;)]

I don't think that G means CD guns -- looking at the 24th USA division, the mouseover shows G131, and they don't have CD weapons. I think G = artillery other than AA, and A = AA weapons.

When I say CD guns, I mean anything that will put holes in your ships [;)]

Okay, I think I figured out why I was so confused. The mouseover display appears to be stale. When I write down the numbers for a particular unit and then compare them against the unit display's numbers they're some mismatches, especially in the Assault field. But when I close the unit display and do the mouseover again, like magic the mouseover now has the correct value.

I don't have to look at the unit display to update; all I have to do is click the unit icon to get the ground unit list display, close that, and then the mouseover has correct values.

Thanks to Mr. Frag for the legend -- I think I also had some confusion about how the guns were divided up between guns (G) and flak (F). And thanks to everyone else who replied--I'd feared this thread had sunk so low as to be dead.

Anyone think this is a bug? If so, I'll repost in the support forum.
