GBirkn -> Land units disappear when unloading from TF (7/11/2004 7:03:37 PM)

I've had two engineer units disappear when unloading from a TF. They appeared to load normally, looked normal as the TF sailed to its destination, but when I told the TF to unload, the units did not appear in the list of ground units at the base. They gradually unloaded from the ships (and I got a couple of "xx subunits merging" messages as they did so) but when the ships were empty, the units no longer showed up anywhere. At least some of their equipment (aviation support, engineer vehicles) seems to be included in the totals for the base, but it doesn't seem to be counted for actually supporting planes.

This is in the Marianas scenario, in a new game that was started after patching.

Please look at the bottom part of your screen and see if the unit shows up there. There is a little bug with the new filter.

OK, I just tried that in a saved game that I created mid-disappearance (the parent units are gone, but some fragments haven't unloaded yet), and there's still no sign of the units. They don't show up in any of the places I can think to look for a ground unit.

Did you look in the ground unit arrivals to see if it is showing up in the future as a replacement?

Just looked there, and no luck again.

I backed up to an earlier save of the same game, and taking a closer look at the transports carrying the two units in question, it looks like the problem started when I loaded them.

In this save, the TF is still docked at Eniwetok, and is "loading supplies". One AP is carrying the "100th/1 SeaBees" and about 200 points of supply. Three other APs are carrying the 71st Aviation Rgt/1, /2 and /3. Two of those three are carrying a small amount of supply as well. There is no 100th SeaBees parent unit that I can find, and no 71st Aviation Rgt. parent unit.

Parent is automatically assigned when unit finishes loading. You should see 1 unit on one of the ships that has a non /# on it's name.

If that unit never got picked, then it is still sitting at the base (not enough transports).

GBirkn -> RE: Land units disappear when unloading from TF (7/11/2004 8:24:07 PM)

Ok, that's what failed to happen here. The units finished loading (there is no on-shore portion of any of the three units loaded in the TF), and while the TF is a bit tight, it looks like there was enough space for all the troops, which is why the TF is now loading supplies. The only exception is the ship carrying the 71st Aviation Rgt./1, which is a 2000 capacity AP at 100% load, with no supply on board.

One of the three units carried by this TF had a fragment "promoted" in the manner you describe -- there's an AP carrying the 73d Base Force, and another with 73d Base Force/2. That did not happen for the other two units -- there's a 100th/1 SeaBees, with no parent, and /1, /2 and /3 fragments of the 71st Aviation, with no parent.

Are there remains of the 100th SB and 71st AV at the base? Do you have another convoy loading them?

GBirkn -> RE: Land units disappear when unloading from TF (7/11/2004 9:03:55 PM)

Thinking about this a little more, I have a theory as to why this happened, and a test seems to confirm it. Here's the theory: the problem began when I created three separate TFs to load these units and then merged them together.

Here's what I did to test this theory. I started up the Marianas scenario, vs. Japanese computer. On turn 1, I took all of the existing TFs and set their destination to be the Eniwetok base where they start (just to avoid distraction). On turn 2, I created a TF with 2xAP of 4000 capacity, and told it to load the 73d Base Force (AP load cost: 7,148). I created another TF with a 6000 cap AP and a 4000 cap AP, and told it to load the 71st Aviation Rgt (AP load cost: 8,080). I created a third TF with a single 6000 cap AP, and told it to load the 100th SeaBees (AP load cost: 3,480). I then selected the 1st TF, the one loading the 73d Base Force, and clicked on "transfer ships to/from tf". I transferred all of the APs from the other two TFs into this one.

The combined TF took a few days to load, but when it finally sailed, it included the 100th SeaBees/1, which left no parent unit behind on the base. (The 73d BF loaded completely with one of the fragments chosen to be the parent, the 71st Aviation left a parent unit behind at the base.) I then sent the TF back to the base, and unloaded it, and the 100th SeaBees disappeared.

So, the obvious workaround is: don't merge TF's while they're loading troops. You can merge them (like the tutorial tells you to), just make sure that they're completely loaded, or better yet a hex out to sea before you do it.

Mr.Frag -> RE: Land units disappear when unloading from TF (7/11/2004 9:35:07 PM)

Yep, it's a bug all right, the 100th SB walked off the planet. Thanks for the details.
