Svar -> Iwo Jima successfully invaded (7/14/2004 9:15:47 AM)

I started Scenario #10 with the goal of successfully invading Iwo Jima and that has been accomplished. The 6 invasion TFs had a total of 493 ships carrying 3 Inf Divs and 6 Mar Divs although I forgot to change the TF carrying the 2nd Mar Div to allow unloading and it was still aboard LSTs when the island fell. The invasion TFs were supported by 209 LSM(R)s, LCI(R)s, LCI(L)s, LCI(M)s, and LCI(G)s that were part of the transport TFs. Due to the heavy bombing and bombardment TFs shelling for two weeks prior to the actual invasion very few of the ships in the invasion TFs were hit by CD guns. The highest system damage on any invasion TF ship was 4. The 5 bombardment TFs consisted of 18 BBs, 11 CAs, 7 CLs, and 35 DDs. The invasion was covered by 4 air combat TFs consisting of 8 CVs, 6 CVLs, 3 BBs, 7 CAs, 4 CLs, and 32 DDs. In addition to those TFs were 4 replenishment TFs that provided fuel, replacement A/C, and A/C ordnance for the air combat TFs. The air combat TFs could have stayed in station for months with those replenishment TFs providing supplies. Here is the result of the first US attack.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It looks like overkill on my part but I learned how to conduct a coordinated late war invasion. There is another air combat TF near Makin Island chasing down the last of the Japanese carriers. I have a screenshot of the condition of the Japanese carriers but I don't know how to paste an image.

timtom -> RE: Iwo Jima successfully invaded (7/14/2004 7:43:49 PM)

Nine divisions attacking abreast on the widest possible front on Iwo Jima would have had a battalion front of about 90 metres.

Sounds about right, as long as you have skirmishers out in front, light cav covering your flanks, and a battery of 12 pounders for support....oops, wrong war.

brisd -> RE: Iwo Jima successfully invaded (7/14/2004 8:34:51 PM)

Over 130000 troops combined on that small island, wonder if there was any place to stand up? [&:] Some tinkering with unit density limits per small islands is in order IMHO. Good preparation of an invasion hex nonetheless!
