Putting mines on the hulls of ships? Deployed from the home islands, these hearty troops walked along the ocean floor until arriving at an enemy port and then would place the mine on the hull of an enemy ship. They would then walk back home to get the detonating device, attach it and then blow the mine.

Looks like a Hard HAt diver with one of those Japanese Pole Charges they used for Anti-tank. I guess they were to exit by sub, walk into a Harbour and plant a Min or use the pole bomb as a Suicide attack on anchored shipping. UB

You are all correct. But officially: The frogmen team member has a long grip mine. The Long grip mine warhead is 2kg moulding blasting powder. When landing crafts passed over frogmen's head, they attack the landing crafts. They can dive during 6 hours. They were called "Fukuryuu" which I think is what they said when told their mission...
