paspunxra -> can anyone help me? (7/16/2004 11:40:16 PM)

Im new on this forum stuff, but I know that I might be able to get some technical assistance on here. I cannot get Pacifc War the Matrix Project to run on my Windows 98 based system. Im not getting enough RAM to run my DOS based programs, any help would be appreciated, especially in plain English because Im in no way a computer whiz. Anyways, anyone that can give me an assist, just email me at paspunxra@yahoo.com or IM me on Yahoo Messenger, the screen name is paspunxra. Thank you

Read the Forum here for that game, it does run on 9x based and Xp.

Theres alot of hints and tips on how to get it to work, I for one don't run the matrix menu but i send pac.exe to desktop as a shortcut and start it in windowed mode so it uses the Dos Box..

Hexed Gamer -> RE: can anyone help me? (7/17/2004 3:53:44 PM)

This taken from searching through the online store function (and I must say Matrix Games staff, why is this not on the games page yet?).

# Windows 98SE / ME / 2000 / XP
# Pentium II 600 Mhz CPU (rec. 800Mhz)
# DirectX 8
# 128 MB RAM (rec. 256 MB)
# Direct X compatible Soundcard
# 8MB Video Graphics Card 16 BIT Color
# 8x CD-ROM (my insert here, this must be an interesting detail for a DD).
# 900MB free Hard Disc space

Does that help in any fashion paspunxra ? :)
What is your current "actual" Ram on your system?

Umm he said War in the Pacific THE MATRIX PROJECT...

The Makeover of the Original DOS game.

Theres another forum here for it.

You can have 1 GIG RAM and you still may not run it well cause as a dos game it uses the first 1 MB as in 640K Ram ;-P

The Forums over there down the pages a bit its a free d/l
The original WITSP Game...

The problem with the original is it was a huge game that in the world of 640K dos games pushed it to a limit, you needed around 600K of ram free to run it right so drivers had to be loaded into High Ram, i used Quemm way back and had my 386dx 33 mhz booting up with 634k of 640k free [:D][:D]

Theres tips in the WITP:Matrix Project forum on getting enough ram to
run the dos game, since a dos box/mode uses only 640k of first 1b of ram for the game... as I said you can have 1 Gig Ram and still not be able run the dos game [:-]

Ooops totally dropped the ball on that one :)

Hmm it is an older DOS game, but ideally I would think that would not be a total problem.

I am actually running 98SE on a older computer entirely because my main system's XP is not always the rightest choice for some older games.

Hello paspunxra,

Don't despair too much. I've got it running on Win98SE (desktop) and Win2000 (laptop).

This issue was discussed at great length on the PacWar Forum about two years ago. I looked in my notebook and found a Forum poll posted on 21 August by "Cmdr. Rudolph." There were a good number of posts regarding this subject. Do a search.

See also posts by "sw30," "Sam-I-am," and "Capt. Harlock" posts.

Good luck,
RayM

I still have my Old P-II 233mhz as a side PC, with win98SE

But for both I have no problems, however I don't use msdos mode on the
P-II, booting into msdos boots up using dos drivers and unless one knows about DOS enough to edit the config to load drivers into upper ram, usually it boots up loading them low and you have 520-530K free.

Original pacwar pushed the Ram Max, it wants 600K or more free ram out of 640k

Setting a shortcut of the pac.exe and setting it to run windowed will have game load into a dos box while still running win98 or XP, the OS if use HMA checked in properties will use high memory to load needed dos drivers If I'm right ( I hate windows, never yet gotten full handle on it, pure DOS I know well..) so it should have 600K+

Fast check: find your icon to open a dos box, in XP its now Command Prompt, type MEM and if it says 600K or more FREE ram your good to go with Pac war used in window mode, should load easy.

In fact my XP reports 655K with 634K as largest useable for a dos prg
1MB high ram, 941K XMS free which indicates 54K of high ram in use (dos drivers loaded high)

Sometimes on some setups you may need edit the config files in win9x that setup the dos box parameters to get over 600K free.

Usually its a Load High=(name of dos driver) needed to make drivers load into HMA

Theres still good info on memory useage in syickys in the Pacific war: The Matrix project forum, Hes been in there but maybe he didn't understand how to, if hes using 9x and booting up in ms-dos mode chances are his config is loading LOW the dos drivers for mouse etc

The better way is setup desktop shortcut for pac.exe and setup properties for it including 2048 xms memory and use HMA area and startup in window not Full mode.

Window expands but its running in dos window.
