turn2 -> Disabled units (7/19/2004 9:05:55 PM)

I know what prevents units from being disabled and heals the ones that are disabled: Great supply, malaria-free zone, support in the green, and HQ and base size helps I think.

What I want to know is what factors are needed for units to start becoming disabled. In other words, if I have a unit with good supply and good support but is in a malaria zone, will it begin to accrue disabled units? What combination of factors are involved in leading to disabled units? Can you have a lot of one factor to offset the lack of another factor (have 3x supply but are in a malaria zone…)? Essentially, what is the disabling matrix?

Lack of supply, being in a malaria zone all cause units to become disabled over time. Lack of supply can do it real fast. Combat loses do not always kill; sometimes it causes units to be disabled. Think of disabled units as being sick, wounded or broken, they do get fixed over time with enough supply and close to it’s HQ. If a unit is over ½ disabled I try and pull them out to a rear area where the HQ is for some R&R.

Does being near a HQ actually help? I don't think so. I think the HQ only increases the amount of support. If you already have enough support you don't need a HQ to keep from becoming disabled.

Being near the parent HQ helps with getting replacements to fill your combat loses. I read it in another thread someplace. I know it works for air replacements and I think it works similar for ground units. If the ground unit is too far from the HQ a sub unit will be formed of the depleted unit. Its then up to you to get the subunit to the bigger unit. Keeping the depleted unit close to the HQ should eliminate this step.

Ok, let me put the question another way – an example.

Let’s say I’m fortifying Port Moresby. I have:
Supply-2001
Supply required-2000

Support-201
Support Required-200

No HQ

PM is, I believe, in a Malaria-Zone (if it isn’t, it is for this ex)

Do units become disabled?
If so, how can I stop it (if I can)?

Would this help?

Supply-10,000
Supply required-2000

Support-400
Support Required-200

No HQ

Malaria Zone

Where does the dastardly disabling disease begin?

IIRC it will be the same as UV. The bigger you build up ie: 6 port/6airbase the Malaria effect should go down.

Been awhile since I tangled with UV though. I just rotate my units alot to somewhere else.

Mr.Frag -> RE: Disabled units (7/19/2004 10:42:09 PM)

Large bases fight off malaria better, but there is no CURE.

You must plan troop rotation as part of your master plans.

Desertdaddy -> RE: Disabled units (7/19/2004 10:44:37 PM)

Look at Guam, right in the middle of the malaria, mosquito infested tropics. Build up a big enough base and it becomes temperate. I've been there; no matter what you do no one could ever accurately describe that place as temperate, and the bugs...

No matter what you do, if you are in a malaria zone you will lose stuff. No as bad as UV seemed to make it but you do lose stuff. It's hot (or cold as in the arctic), and the bugs...

OK, this helps. From what I understand then, all bases that are in a Malaria zone will always experience disablement to some degree (depending on base size, supply, support etc.) Can I assume then that any base in a temperate zone will not experience disablement if the units there have enough supply and support? (sorry to be a pest but I hate those little parenthesis)

Correct ... thats *where* you take your boys to get them healthy again.

What if we send massive shipments of DDT? Would that solve the problem? [:D]

On a more serious note: Does the AI handle troop rotation for computer controlled zones?
