Grunty -> When will finally be possible to buy boxed version? (7/21/2004 3:02:51 PM)

Don't you think this digital download and CD on demand is proving to be a clumsy affair. Many of UV and WitP fans doesn't have fast enough connection or their credit card and as for CD on demand; we can see complaints that even inside the US it takes more than two weeks to get it (if you get it at all).. better not to mention Europe or Australia...[sm=crazy.gif]

So I'm asking when will I be finally able to go to the store and buy a nice boxed version, the old fashioned way (with all the goodies included, hopefully) as I'm getting really frustrated...[sm=00000018.gif]... just reading posts from the lucky ones that already have their copy...is it really so much trouble to ship a few boxes overseas..

thanks ...
growingly impatient Grunty..[sm=Christo_pull_hair.gif]

MadDawg -> RE: When will finally be possible to buy boxed version? (7/21/2004 3:06:12 PM)

Grunty, do you mean the Matrix store, or a retail store? Im pretty sure Ive read that it will never be released in a retail store, but should be available in the boxed version in early August (that was some time ago though).

Just for the record I had no problem myself with the direct download and didnt worry about the backup CD (I burnt one myself), but I understand its not suitable for those without faster connections.

Grunty -> RE: When will finally be possible to buy boxed version? (7/21/2004 3:10:49 PM)

are you sure it won't be available in retail shops... darn... do Matrix thinks everybody can just download it easily... what kind of game doesn't get in retail shops .... ?... marginal and insignificant I would say..

Mr.Frag -> RE: When will finally be possible to buy boxed version? (7/21/2004 3:12:59 PM)

This product will not be available through retail stores. It can only be purchased directly from Matrix.

Platoonist -> RE: When will finally be possible to buy boxed version? (7/21/2004 3:16:30 PM)

Hate to say it but wargames of this depth and complexity are a niche market item. To the big retailers we are marginal. I consider it a minor miracle that it came to exist at all.

Grunty -> RE: When will finally be possible to buy boxed version? (7/21/2004 3:23:32 PM)

that's just great.... so how will I be ever able to buy it?... I guess I will have to wait untill it gets out in August (if...).. order it from Matrix store and wait for a month or so..... and if all go well.. I will be able to play it just before Haloween..... yipppiii....[:(]

Mr.Frag -> RE: When will finally be possible to buy boxed version? (7/21/2004 3:38:15 PM)

Can you explain what is stopping you from buying it right now?

Zorfwaddle -> RE: When will finally be possible to buy boxed version? (7/21/2004 3:46:55 PM)

I remember seeing UV in the Best Buy in Gilroy (CA). I was so surprised, I bought it :-)

Regards,

Grunty -> RE: When will finally be possible to buy boxed version? (7/21/2004 3:58:30 PM)

the lack of credit card (appropriate for a purchase that is) and slow and unreliable internet connection.... besides if I pay that amount of money (WitP is waaaaayyy more expensive than other gaming software), I expect I will get at least something (an original CD, box, goodies, manuscript)... not just a lousy download permit... I mean it does cost around 66 Euros (around 75 bucks) and that's without shipping costs... what do you say?.... am I not reasonable..?[:(]

Not really. [;)]

WitP is a specialty product, not a normal game. Normal game prices do not apply.

Grunty -> RE: When will finally be possible to buy boxed version? (7/21/2004 4:10:38 PM)

I would have to play it before I could confirm that,... wouldn't you say?[>:]

Stavka_lite -> RE: When will finally be possible to buy boxed version? (7/21/2004 4:25:00 PM)

I am sure that this statement will be confirmed by several other players.

This game is worth the money.

I only buy one or two games a year as I am terrribly picky and have been disappointed too many times. So far the only disappointment that I have is that I don't have enough time to play this game.

I for one don't see the value of having a box, they just gather dust on the shelf, and a printed manual of this size is just not feasible. The PDF manual is well done and searchable.

MadmanRick -> RE: When will finally be possible to buy boxed version? (7/21/2004 4:26:52 PM)

I can honestly say that I have never before played a game as complex or as overwhelming (in a good way), as War In The Pacific. So in terms of comparing WitP's cost in dollars against other games, yes it is obviously more expensive. However, as has been pointed out in these very forums many times, in terms of bang for the buck WitP is far and away, THE cheapest game you'll ever buy (imho). Take this analogy: I purchased Railroad Tycoon 3 when it came out last year, I loved the 2nd one, so I figured hey the improvements HAD to make it a better game, right? I paid $49.99 plus the 8% NYC tax, so it was like $54 total. After MANY fruitless attempts to get the game to run without crashing, I think I finally ended up playing the game for a total of maybe 8 hours. It now sits on my shelf gathering dust. On the other hand I paid $49.99 for Uncommon Valor direct from Matrix (the boxed version) appox. a year ago. I can tell you that for at least 7 of those months, it was the ONLY game I booted up on my machine. So far, having paid $70 and change for WitP, the circumstances are exactly the same. I expect that this game will be the ONLY game played on my computer for at least the next 8 months and probably quite a few more. In fact, I downloaded SPMBT v.3 the night it was released and have yet to even run the install program. So in the end, obviously only YOU can decide if this game is worth the cash, but I can say that for myself, this game is worth a great deal more, probably on the order of 5 or 6 times more....thank goodness I got it "on sale" [:D]!!

I also wait for the box version before I place my order. Has a collector, I prefer that.

Mario, if you get WitP now you can get it via DigitalDownload but can also order CD for additional 10$. So I think there is nothing to wait for here...

The only (possible) question is whether current CD (that is send now) would be different (visually only) than one in few weeks time (i.e. some fancy gfx on CD face). Anyone who already got CD from Matrix can post picture of CD perhaps?

andytimtim -> RE: When will finally be possible to buy boxed version? (7/21/2004 4:57:55 PM)

one question still remains...you dont recieve a manual with the new box version, correct?

rogueusmc -> RE: When will finally be possible to buy boxed version? (7/21/2004 5:12:14 PM)

From what I gather, the only thing you get with the boxed version that you don't get with the CD on demand option is a box....more of a DVD case from the looks of it and I have plenty of those I can stick my copy in if I wanted to.

I had a friend that had dialup and didn't wanna try the download so I burned him the download and he bought his own install serial number. Cheaper and easier for him.

andytimtim -> RE: When will finally be possible to buy boxed version? (7/21/2004 5:15:15 PM)

will the box version be cheaper? i hope not, if so thats mean ive spent an extra £10 on the DD and backup CD!

Mr.Frag -> RE: When will finally be possible to buy boxed version? (7/21/2004 5:20:36 PM)

The boxed version will just be another option your can check off.

Currently:

( ) War in the Pacific - (via Digital Download)

( ) Optional Backup CD (plain CD)

(soon)

( ) Optional Boxed version (pretty box, pretty CD)

I very much doubt there will be printed manuals in the boxed version as some of you have found out the cost of printing small numbers of manuals is excessive!

TheHellPatrol -> RE: When will finally be possible to buy boxed version? (7/21/2004 9:04:32 PM)

If the "boxed" version involves DR in any shape or form i'll pass, this whole affair has been a huge fiasco IMHO. They don't have a clue on what they're doing, i have been contacted by Matrix due to "conflicting reports" from DR concerning my order placed July 1st/2nd which i still haven't gotten. Add to the equation that my $3000.00 "plays best on" Alienware computer CTD's with Witp's current state (being worked on) i am losing patience to the point of shelving the game altogether...although after the patch i will come to my senses...i don't even plan on getting BIN anymore until long after the dust settles. This game is too close to my heart being an avid grognard as i am...ever since i was 10 buying Avalon Hill board games...and now 32 years later i have found the potential panacea of wargaming... Witp. $80.00 so far has gotten me prepared to play a "real" game...with sound[X(]...and some good reading. As far as my $10 for the backup disk? I don't even give a damn anymore...life is too short...i'll pray for the patch.

andytimtim -> RE: When will finally be possible to buy boxed version? (7/21/2004 9:06:10 PM)

some ones still to answer my question!...will the box version be cheaper!

witpwife -> RE: When will finally be possible to buy boxed version? (7/21/2004 9:46:44 PM)

The manual that you get with the DD, and on the backup CD you can order now, is a PDF version that you can read on the computer or print out yourself. Because it is so large, one option, if you have a CD burner, is to copy the manual onto a CD, and take it to a local printshop (we used Kinkos/Fed Ex, but I don't know whether they have them in Britain). For $10 we got a printed and bound manual. Otherwise we would have gone through 2 or 3 $30 printer cartridges. It is nice to have a printed manual that you can annotate and look at while you are in the middle of a turn.

neuromancer -> RE: When will finally be possible to buy boxed version? (7/21/2004 9:56:24 PM)

In a civilized country like Canada, DSL or Cable is the norm, not the exception.

Many of you poor people that live in backwards, underdeveloped countries - like the U.S. - still have to use dial-up?

You have my pity.

[:'(]

On a serious note, I had no problems with the download.
Unfortunately, I do have a problem with the font, but that is another matter.

And has been stated, war games are a niche market. A 'monster game' like WitP is a niche of a niche. I would be very surprised if any retailers ever carried it. Ordering a CD online, or via DL, is probably the only way a game like WitP would be distributed.

SunDevil_MatrixForum -> RE: When will finally be possible to buy boxed version? (7/21/2004 10:13:04 PM)

No andytimtim it will not be cheaper, just another option like Mr. Frag said.

UncleBuck -> RE: When will finally be possible to buy boxed version? (7/21/2004 10:45:07 PM)

If you enjoy MASSIVE logistic and scale games then WitP is what you want, it is worth it. If you are a First Person Shooter player or Starcraft/Lords or the Realm/Warcraft Gamer you will not care for this one. If you are unsure if you want to get WitP pick up a copy of Uncommon Valor. It is less expensive; I bet you can get it used on Amazon.com or Ebay for less than 20 dollars US. It will give you a good taste of what WitP is. As for no box, who cares. The Manual is GIANT. It would cost more than 80 dollars for Matrix to print a copy for each game. As it is now I printed the 220 pages in BW and put it in a 3 ring binder. After I bought the ream of pre-punched paper and the three ring binder it cost me 15 dollars for the whole thing. Oh I also printed out all of the COLOR maps that are on the CD. I don't keep the boxes anymore. I found they were just getting in the way.

If you like the TAOW or other strategy games you will like WitP. If you ever played Squad Leader, Panzer Leader, Dawn Patrol or any of the other Avalon Hill type games this is for you.

UB

EDIT, Dang Spel Check changed TAOW to TOAW!

Frag

Optional Boxed version (pretty box, pretty CD)

Any idea what the cost will be to buy the boxed version for those of us who already bought the downloaded version?

rogueusmc -> RE: When will finally be possible to buy boxed version? (7/21/2004 11:17:18 PM)

It will probably be a second purchase.
