Dave_R -> In rememberance, a way forward? (11/13/2000 2:28:00 AM)

Today as I sat watching the service of remembrance from the cenotaph in London a few thoughts struck me. This year was the first year that there were official representatives for the Muslim, Jewish, Sikh, and Hindi faiths. There to pay respect to those who had put aside there differences and had fallen fighting in a common cause. In an age where religious belief is still one of the most common causes of wars being fought it was nice to see the major faiths standing shoulder to shoulder, to pay respect to men who put aside their differences to fight a common cause. It would be nice to think that in this service of remembrance perhaps this one uniting cause might lead on to more tolerance and understanding, and acceptance of each other and in the long run might make the sacrifice made by all those men and women even more worth while..

Noble sentiments well expressed! I suppose it is unlikely that we would get to know all the reasons why it has taken so long for this to happen. Whilst seconding your wishes I do not feel particularly optimistic as the human predilections for extremism in religion & politics often are linked with megalomania which has to find a scapegoat as a unifying hatred to further its own ends. Sad!
