Drex -> 75mm as Off-board Arty (1/26/2002 2:57:00 AM)

In a recent game I started, I had chosen 75mm batteries as my off-board arty but during the deployment phase when I went to assign them to a pre-bombardment, I got the meassage that they were "out-of -range" and were not available. Why were they listed in the first place if they couldn't be used? I had to abort the game and start over because I was afraid I wouldn't have any arty at all.

Guns that will not cover the entire map will show out of range until you pick a target hex inside their range. Most 75mm guns have better than 100 range so they can fire all the way across a 40x100 map. The only guns that are next to worthless in this regard are those like the Japanese 75mm mtn battery. With only a 25 hex range, they hardly can shoot to cover their edge of the map, covering just the back quarter of a 100 hex wide small map. An opponent would have to penetrate very far just to get in range of these guns.
thanks, John.

Very nasty feature - check the range before purchasing that off-board stuff - especially on a large map. Learned that the hard way. Only thing I could hit was my own positions.

When checking the range for offboard arty, do you measure from the top hex at your edge of the map? I *think* I remember seeing a post about this a while back.

Bing -> (1/26/2002 9:09:00 PM)

I think top left hex, but please don't quote me on this. I seem to remember problems a while back with OBA hitting nothing but a small square of hexes in the upper left sseciton of the map. How you figure range from that is something I don't know. When I figure "slant" range for small (50mm)onboard mortars and so on, I use the time-honored "Square Root of the sum of the squares of the left-right distance and the up-down distance" and it works OK. If, for instance, the solution comes out to 10.3 or 10.5, then the mortar with a range of 11 can still be used. I.e. I don't see where the game routine "rounds up". I think some of the problems with offboard 75's have been fixed, but you absolutely do have to take a serious look at the range of the piece and the mpa you will be playing on - even if its a big map, the area of your operations may allow for 75's to operate. I have noticed that on board artillery of the same type as off board artillery have different ranges.

Yep, this stung me in a pbem game that is in progress. Bought hungarian 75's (30 hex range). They only just cover the rear objectives in a meeting engagement. Just have to hope I get my *** kicked really well so I can use them... or what?
I think guns like these should only be offboard, the offboard feature is just plain silly.

Onboard, that is.

I think, too, you ran through a bad purchase, Drex.
I remember not long ago I had the same "problem", when I bought some 75mm Jap OBA and then I realized they were 75mm Mn(mountain?) guns with range of 25...they have the same icons as the others...

NeoWhiteWolf -> (1/29/2002 7:00:00 PM)

IF youve read on the pacific theater the reason Japan suffered so many losses was the fact that what little Artillery they had inneffective and threw most of the war they didnt use it.

K G von Martinez -> (1/29/2002 10:05:00 PM)

Well, may be their guns were lousy, but a range of 25 hexes = 1250 m??? Even with guns of the civil war they would have more range!

Sittign at home - working .. and watching the World At War - (my partner brought me the complete series on DVD for XMAS) - Kassarine pass and ther is a battery of German 75mm firing - dont know that its that worrying in the game - but it certainyl seemed to have ben blowing the crap out of some american unit. Slighly OT i know - but there you go Ubertechie

DataKing -> (1/30/2002 7:30:00 AM)

Greetings and salutations, Make sure that you set the range for those units to maximum using the 'Headquarters' function. You can use this list to set the range for units a group at a time. I have noticed that the range set for some units is very short at first (in the first battle of a long campaign, for example). I think this has something to do with the terrain and weather present during the battle. The last battle I played in, it tried to set the range of my offboard 150mm battery to 4. Hope this helps.
